Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Multi Trades Chief II is a member of the Community Maintenance team in the Facilities Maintenance Unit. This position is responsible for the development and operation of a community maintenance operation in areas as assigned. The incumbent will complete various mechanical and administrative tasks daily. This position performs routine maintenance activities in residential community buildings. In addition, regularly monitors Building Systems controls in mechanical rooms and, as needed, adjusts values to maintain system operations. The incumbent may perform as a lead worker, supervising crews of temporary employees during the summer months. The Multi Trades Chief II is supervised by the Multi Trades Supervisor II.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: HS/GED.
Experience: Five years progressively responsible experience in the trade(s) where assigned to include at least two years in a lead or supervisory capacity.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilties:

Comprehensive knowledge of and skill in the methods and techniques of the trade(s) where assigned; of the OSHA regulations related to the trade(s) area. Thorough knowledge of and skill in the practical application of electronics, hydraulics, and mechanics as used in maintenance work; of basic mathematics including area, volume, weights and the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions; of the care and storage of equipment and supplies used in the area where assigned. General knowledge of the principles of supervision in the maintenance trades. Skill in the use and maintenance of the tools and equipment of the trade(s) where assigned. Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, schematics, drawings, and specifications; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to lead and train skilled and unskilled employees in assigned trade(s) work; to prepare summaries and reports; to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work from ladders and scaffolding; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 70 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on machinery and equipment; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Conditions of Employment:
  • This position requires an on site presence.
  • Position is eligible to work a flexible schedule of five 8-hour days, 7:30am – 4:00pm (Monday – Friday) or four 10-hour days, 7:30am – 6:00 pm with varied days off.
  • Some evening and weekend work may be required.
  • The position is an essential employee related to catastrophic, weather, or other emergencies and may be required to come to work, including overtime, when the University is closed to perform general maintenance/ clean up tasks as needed.
  • Other duties assigned.

Physical Demands:
  • The incumbent will be required to work from ladders or scaffolding; to work in, on, around, over, and under fixed equipment and machinery; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 70 lbs.
  • Position requires the following physical activities: kneeling, stooping, climbing, walking, and lifting.
  • Will work in hazardous or irritating environments, un-air-conditioned spaces and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
  • This position may require the incumbent to exercise sustained physical activity in demonstrating or assisting in completing a relatively wide range of maintenance tasks.
  • The incumbent will be required to drive a state vehicle to inspect work and may be required to shovel snow and handle snow-moving equipment (snow blowers, plows) as part of essential responsibilities.
