Description

The School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences at Auburn University is seeking applicants for a graduate research assistantship (M.S.) in Wildlife Ecology and Management. The student selected for the position will conduct their thesis research associated with ongoing research at a private property located approximately 20 miles from Auburn. This property consists of an intensively managed 800-acre high-fenced enclosure and an associated 2,500 acres outside of the enclosure. Current research on the property focuses on survey techniques (aerial thermal surveys, camera surveys) for white-tailed deer, survival and reproduction of translocated deer, and other aspects of white-tailed deer management. This research will involve extensive field work at the study site, as well as at the Auburn University Captive Deer Facility. Additionally, the student involved with this project will occasionally be requested to assist the landowner with deer management activities. Tasks include but are not limited to filling deer feeders, maintenance of hunting stands, conducting trail camera surveys for deer, and checking fence for damage. The position will be available beginning August of 2022. The selected student will receive a research stipend (M.S. - $18,000) and a tuition waiver.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess a B.S. degree in Wildlife Ecology or related field, a strong work ethic, and field experience. Preference will be given to students that have hunting and/or property management experience, as these skills are of increased value to the property owner.
