Job Summary:

The Department of Neurology at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus is seeking to recruit a dynamic Assistant Professor with strong values and unique research skills for our department. Job Duties

  • Build an independent research portfolio through internal and external funding.
  • Obtain grant funding as a Principal Investigator (PI).
  • Independently and in collaboration with others, be responsible for assisting and playing a significant role with technical writing, grant, and manuscript preparations, as well as active participation in academic biomedical research.
  • Develop relevant questions, formulate hypotheses, and design clinical studies.
  • Participate, engage, and develop research education for graduate students, Movement Disorder Fellows, members of the community, and other learners interested in this area. 

Grant writing

  • Generate high-quality proposals, narratives, applications, and supporting documents in response to funding opportunities.
  • Work with appropriate personnel to research, develop, write, and submit letters of intent, concept papers, and proposals.
  • Independently and in collaboration, be responsible for writing grants and serving as a Principal Investigator and/or Co-Investigator on NIH and sponsored studies. 

Human subject research

  • Conduct routine and standardized human subject research using appropriate research or interview techniques specific to subject matter of the research project.
  • Ensure that each individual to whom a task is delegated is qualified by virtue of education, training, and experience (e.g., certification, human subjects research training, state license) to perform each of their delegated tasks.
  • Protect the rights, safety and welfare of the participants who will be under your care.
  • Oversee your research is conducted in accordance with all federal regulatory requirements, state law and CU and UCHealth policies.
  • Ensure the accuracy, security, and integrity of your research data and the subsequent analysis of that data.

Education

  • Connect with graduate students, Movement Disorder Fellows, community members, and other learners who are interested in clinical research, study design, and clinical features of Movement Disorders.
  • Connect interested students with faculty to provide research career exploration experiences.
  • Mentor and advise Movement Disorder Fellows and new Movement Disorder Faculty in clinical research.
  • Develop curriculum as needed for clinical research training for both internal and external learners.
  • Collaborate with other clinical research experts in the department and the University to share new study designs, statistical analyses, breakthroughs in research, and funding opportunities.
  • Host workshops on how to identify new avenues of funding, writing techniques, best practices of publishing, and building on prior projects. 

Other duties may be assigned as need arises.

More than 5,000 movement disorders patients are served by the University of Colorado Hospital MDC clinics annually - by far the Rocky Mountain Region’s largest referral center for these conditions. In addition to outpatient visits, our practitioners also provide specialized services such as Deep Brain Stimulation surgery (DBS), botuliunum toxin injections (Botox), physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, neuropsychological testing, and psychiatric services. 

 

University of Colorado Movement Disorders investigators are conducting 30-50 research studies at any time, funded by the National Institutes of Health and other governmental agencies, Michael J. Fox Foundation and other private foundations, and industry. These studies include: basic research, translational and clinical trials; multi-center and investigator-initiated trials; and collaborations across our department, medical school, campus, and local, national, and international institutions. Our faculty engages students and graduates of all levels in these research projects.

 

As well as educating students in research, our faculty teaches health care students and professionals locally, nationally, and internationally. The MDC sponsors a monthly campus multidisciplinary lecture series and co-sponsors a quarterly video rounds and an annual CME event for local physicians and neurologists. MDC members have an educational conference every other week, which includes journal club, lectures, and video rounds. Further, the MDC actively participates in and educates community lay movement disorders groups.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:  

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.  

Assistant Professor:  

  • PhD in Neuroscience or related field.
  • 2 years of clinical research experience. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Candidates with experience writing clinical trial proposals.
  • Regular publication of results and contribution to grant renewal is expected.
  • Experience in developing intellectual property assets from research discoveries.
  • Excellent communication skills; written and spoken.
  • Be able to supervise laboratory personnel and trainees, and have the ability to present complex material to both scientific and general audiences. 
  • Experience writing grants and serving as a Principal Investigator and/or Co-Investigator on NIH and/or sponsored studies.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

  • Assistant Professor - $100,000-$110,000

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
