Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill One part-time (a maximum of 20 hours per week) African Heritage Outreach Assistant for the Moore Family Center Student Fellowship with Oregon State University (OSU).
The OSU Moore Family Center Healthy Community Outreach Fellowship program provides essential community-based experiential learning opportunities for OSU College of Public Health & Human Sciences students, giving them hands-on experience in diverse Oregon communities. 
This learning opportunity will increase the skills of students in the areas of community-based participatory research, community engagement, health leadership, best practices in health promotion and behavior, and promoting policy, systems, and environmental changes in order to optimize the nutrition and health of every person, every family, and every community.
This student position will work closely with the SNAP Nutrition Education African Heritage program and workgroup at the Oregon State University Extension Service in Multnomah County. The position will work 20 to 30 hours per week through summer term 2023, or up to a maximum of 300 total hours. 
Students are encouraged to seek academic credit for this job opportunity (required internship or practicum hours). Some work duties may be flexible to meet academic program requirements.

Position Duties
The student will work in partnership with local OSU faculty and staff on multiple aspects of community and online engagement, and cooking demonstrations and will assist with other community health projects. 
This includes developing and implementing educational activities for children and their families at the farmers’ market, promoting the program, preparing, and offering samples of A Taste of African Heritage recipes at food pantries, and assessing the program’s impact. The student will also have the opportunity to work collaboratively with community partners.
Duties include:
  • 40%: Prepare and deliver educational events and activities in the community 
  • 20%: Create marketing and communication materials, including social media and online content 
  • 15%: Promote African Heritage Program at the farmers’ market and food pantries 
  • 15%: Participate in community engagement and workgroup meetings and trainings 
  • 10%: Data collection, entry, and analysis

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Must be an enrolled OSU student in good standing through summer term 2023. NOTE: Students graduating in June and not enrolled through summer term are not eligible for summer student positions.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent time-management skills and attention to detail
  • Experience with spreadsheets, database management, and data entry
  • Professional or lived experience using social media applications
  • Ability to follow instructions as well as work independently and make decisions within the expectations of supervisors
  • Interest in nutrition, public health, and chronic disease prevention
  • Use of a personal vehicle and valid driver’s license for local travel is required
  • This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 2 years
  • This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the University; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions (as per Voluntary and Compulsory Driver Standards OSU Standard 125-155-0200) as per OSU Standard 576-056-0000 et seq
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Students enrolled in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences (all levels, all campuses including e-campus) preferred
  • Completion of 2 years of an academic program or an equivalent number of years of experience working in community-based education or outreach settings
  • Team or project planning experience
  • Prior experience teaching or delivering educational programs
  • Familiarity with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommendations or coursework in nutrition and dietetics
  • Knowledge or experience working with African heritage communities
  • Students from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
This position requires some evening and weekend meetings or events. Student must be available to travel to local community sites in the Portland metro area to deliver or attend programs (Mileage reimbursement will be provided.) 
As such, applicants must be willing to live / travel within the local area and work flexible hours during summer term. Some work hours / tasks may be completed remotely, as approved by supervisor.
