Modern Language Notes Managing Editor

We are seeking a Modern Language Notes Managing Editor  who will be responsible for the daily management of all five issues of MLN over the entire year. Meeting with different editors and visiting campus as needed will also fall under the purview of this role.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Receiving and logging submissions.
  • Triaging and sharing submissions with appropriate faculty board members for initial consideration.
  • Communicating first-round rejections with authors.
  • Sending articles out for blind review.
  • Communicating with reviewers.
  • Sharing feedback with authors and the editorial board.
  • Proofreading and copy-editing articles and communicating with authors throughout the copy-editing process.
  • Receiving and acknowledging books sent in for review.
  • Communicating with the editorial board for input on potential reviewers.
  • Sending books out for review and receiving reviews.
  • Copy-editing reviews and preparing them for publication.
  • In consultation with the Hopkins Press legal specialists, advising contributors about permissions.
  • Selecting cover art.
  • Training and hiring editorial assistants.
  • Coordinating this process among five issues while ensuring the overall workflow doesn’t lag.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of one or more languages other than English is highly desirable.
  • Exceptional ability in copywriting and editing.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Outstanding organizational management, time management, and project management skills.

Physical Requirements 

  • Able to lift general office equipment and supplies (~20 pounds)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field.
  • Two years related experience. If degree is not in a related field, three years related experience required.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A master’s or doctoral degree in literature.
  • Three to five years of editing experience.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination.
