Model Laboratory Schools at Eastern Kentucky University provides a world-class K-12 educational experience designed to prepare the next generation of leaders. Established in September 1906, Model opened its doors as the first school of its kind in Kentucky as an integral part of the Eastern Kentucky Normal School, which would become Eastern Kentucky University. Model is the only educational laboratory school in the Commonwealth, which has established it as a school of choice throughout the region.

 

Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Model Lab School Assistant Principal, under the direction of and as assigned by the Principal, and in place of the principal when absent, is responsible to implement and facilitate the educational objectives of the school. Assistant Principal will assist with supervision, management, discipline, maintenance of policies and procedures and ensuring the overall welfare of students and employees. Should have a strong sense of emotional and situational intelligence and the ability to mediate and deescalate people and situations. Requires supervision of events and activities outside the regular school day. Required to work in and outdoors in various conditions (e.g., rain, snow) and temperatures. Faculty must also meet physical requirements such as standing for long periods of time, walking sustained periods of time and long distances, occasional running and sprinting, bending, stooping and lifting at least 40 pounds. Must be physically able to restrain a student in accordance with proper training.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Experience: Three to five years of related work experience

Licensure & Certifications: Kentucky administrative certification for principal

Preferred Qualifications:

Successful experience with student supervision and discipline, and school management.

Job Duties:

  • 50% - General: • Supervises programs to enhance individual student education and development; • Plans organizes and directs implementation of specific school activities, as assigned by the Principal; • Assumes leadership in the direction of the school’s co-curricular and extracurricular activities; • Prepares or supervises the preparation of reports, records, lists and all other paperwork required or appropriate to the school’s administration; • Participates in principals’ meetings and all other such meetings as are required or appropriate; • Cooperates with college and university officials regarding teacher training and preparation; • Works with appropriate central administrative staff regarding the needs of the school with respect to personnel, equipment, supplies and curriculum; • Assists in conducting staff meetings to keep members informed of policy changes and new programs and to implement professional development programs; • Keeps the superintendent informed of the school’s successes, activities and problems; • Keeps abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals and other publications and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field; • Exerts leadership in the development of professional development programs for all staff members; • Assists the principal in instructional and operational responsibilities; • Supervises and evaluates certified and classified personnel as assigned by the Principal; • Analyzes data to inform decisions about curriculum, instruction and assessment in order to increase student achievement; • Ensures the observation of all federal, state, district and school policies, procedures and safety regulations; • Assists in the supervision of the student-teacher and new employee induction program; • Cooperates as a consultant and advisor to the central administrative staff and supervisory personnel as required; • Maintains regular attendance; • Implements security and safety measures as assigned; • Assists with the coordination and interpretation of state and school testing programs; • Engages in rigorous data analysis, results planning, and multi-tiered systems of support; • Supervises events and activities outside the regular school day, as needed; • Performs general administrative and supervisory duties in total operation of school and assumes responsibilities for general administration of the school in the absence of the Principal; • Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or superintendent; - (Essential)
  • 40% - Student Conduct and Discipline • Supervises discipline and attendance; • Establishes guidelines for proper student conduct with the parameters of existing policies, procedures and regulations; • Provides proper supervision of pupils at all times; • Maintains effective learning environment mentorship of the school; - (Essential)
