What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate.  Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

 

The Digital Engineering Strategy Program Office (W-DES) is looking for Model Based Systems Engineers who will play a key role in the development of Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) practices within the weapons programs at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).  As part of the W-DES team, the Models Based Systems Engineer will participate in the establishment of MBSE practices, integration of the capability within LANL programs, and MBSE tool development.

 

R&D Engineer 2 $94,100 - $155,700

This position will support the creation and maintenance of digital models for Systems Engineering efforts on current and future programs. The successful candidate will work closely with Systems Engineers, Subject Matter Experts, and Program Managers to accurately capture system architecture and functionality in a way to provide meaning insight into our programs. The Model Based Systems Engineer will need to be highly collaborative as well possessing the flexibility needed to support a new approach to Systems Engineering.

 

R&D Engineer 3 $113,100 - $190,900

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the Model Based Systems Engineer will be expected to lead the MBSE efforts for larger projects or programs. The successful candidate will help to develop and enhance the MBSE processes being utilized as well as training staff on the usefulness and capabilities of the tools. The Model Based Systems Engineer will regularly  collaborate with external customers in support of our programs.   

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

 

Systems Engineering Experience: Understanding of basic systems engineering principles. This will include experience with the design, development, test, or manufacturing of complex mechanical systems. Basic knowledge of system architecture, requirements management, and the verification and validation process is expected.

 

Collaboration/Teaming: Demonstrated ability to work closely with teams. Must be able to build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external customers, as well as horizontal integrations across programs.

 

Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills. Must have the ability to communicate efficiently and effectively to coordinate systems engineering activities across programs.

 

Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the Level 3 requires:


  • Demonstrated experience with Systems engineering principles;

  • Understanding of project management principles with experience in the development and implementation of engineering projects.

Education/Experience at the Level 2 Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

 

Education/Experience at the Level 3: Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with MBSE and common modeling approaches.

  • Experience with Systems Modeling Language (SysML) or other data architecture approaches (DoDAF, UML, OSLC, etc).

  • Understanding of current MBSE technologies as well as future roadmaps.

  • Advanced knowledge of System Engineering Standards.

  • Experience with requirements management and associated requirements management tools.

  • Demonstrated experience in nuclear weapons development, qualification, and certification.

  • Active Q clearance, or the ability to obtain an Active Q clearance.
