Summary of Job Duties:

Full Time
The Milk Bank Lab technician is responsible for all essential tasks in handling and processing the human milk through the milk bank laboratory. The individuals fulfilling this role maintain lab equipment, cleaning all areas, storage and distribution zones, and maintain needed operational inventory. The individuals in this role process the human milk according to FDA and HMBANA guidelines as well as maintain records for maintenance of equipment, cleaning schedules, all drug testing and macronutrient analysis of the human milk. This role should be food handler certified and training to support milk processing techniques.

Qualifications:

Required:
  • Possess a certification in Food Preparation, High School Diploma, 1 year of Hospital or Healthcare Laboratory technician experience and be familiar with Microsoft Office.

Preferred requirements:

  • Obtain Formula/Human Milk Technician Certificate within 1 year of hire.


Additional Information:

Operations

  • Duties related to HM pasteurization (including but not limited to the following):
  • Follows clean handling techniques with human milk including protective equipment (gown, gloves, mask, hat and scrubs) with antimicrobial hand scrub.
  • Works with other staff according to a schedule (made by UHMB Lab supervisor) to clean lab surfaces, glass ware, equipment and other supplies as well as maintaining clean room, dirty room, lab technical room surfaces and equipment.
  • Maintains records of milk processing (as defined by HMBANA requirement), records of cleaning schedule and equipment maintenance.
  • Maintains logs of refrigerator and freezer temperatures
  • Monitors milk thawing according to Pasteurization Procedures 
  • Maintains records of human milk intake, pasteurization and batching in Timeless
  • Labels all milk with Timeless barcoded thermal labels
  • Pasteurizes, cools and freezes all processed human milk according to the Pasteurization Procedures, HMBANA guidelines.
  • Sends one sample bottle for micro-bacteriology testing and logs results.
  • Moves cleared (microbiology testing negative) batches from quarantine freezer to Shipping/Pasteurized Milk Freezer
  • Duties related to Milk Testing and Analysis
  • Has milk samples ready for pick up/send out for micro-bacterial testing
  • Logs milk for micro sampling in Timeless
  • Logs results from micro-bacterial batch testing
  • Maintains milk analyzer and logs for cleaning and zeroing
  • Performs daily zeroing of milk analyzer
  • Maintains in timeless nutrient analysis of individual donors and batch analysis
  • Maintains drug testing records

Budget

  • Essential to maintain needed operational inventory in conjunction with resource management by budget guidelines.

Compliance

  • The individuals in this role process the human milk according to FDA and HMBANA guidelines as well as maintain records for maintenance of equipment.

Research

  • Assist with data collection for research purposes but not limited to drug testing and macronutrient analysis of the human milk.

Customer Service

  • Interacts with and assists the public in a professional and friendly manner as needed.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills; communicates accurate and complete information; maintains strict confidentiality when necessary.
  • Demonstrates positive working relationships with co-workers, management team, and ancillary departments; follows the Core Concepts of Patient and Family Centered Care and the Basic Code of Conduct Guidelines.
  • Assist internal and external stakeholders as needed with exceptional customer service.
