Brief Position Overview
The Technology Writer/Content Specialist for MilTech will organize, write, and develop technology-oriented communication deliverables primarily for Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Department of Defense (DOD) customers and related projects. This person will organize and summarize complex technology information and other research to achieve project communication objectives. Target audiences will vary, so this position will require expertise and skill in writing effectively across a variety of styles, including technical, Plain Language, and marketing content, as well as be able to generate content that meets 508 Compliance requirements.

General Statement

Duties and Responsibilities
The Technology Writer/Content Specialist will work closely with MilTech Staff and government customers to develop a wide range of technology-oriented written and digital content for customer-defined projects and supporting efforts across MilTech. Communications will primarily follow Plain Language style guidelines to align with government requirements, but other writing styles may be required for specific project needs. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Utilize advanced writing techniques to develop content that effectively expresses highly technical, complex information in a clear Plain Language style for target audiences, to achieve the communication objectives.
  • Research and coordinate content for communication deliverables from data sources, print resources, digital resources, archives, subject matter experts, organizational professionals, internal stakeholders, external stakeholders, and other data sources.
  • Write effectively across a variety of styles, including technical, Plain Language and marketing content, evaluating client needs and project requirements to determine most appropriate approach.
  • Develop and create a wide variety of communication deliverables as required by project, such as research reports, standard operating procedures (SOP) documents, marketing products, technical documents, white papers, project plans, requirement documents, articles, press releases, meeting minutes, notices, instructions, communications campaign plans, case studies, guidance documents, fact sheets, web content, and training materials defining technical requirements, etc.
  • Ensure that all communication deliverables are compliant with appropriate requirements, such as Section 508 Compliance Guidelines, DHS Communications Media Policy, Federal Government Standards, and other applicable requirements for branding, styling, and layout.
  • Produce high-quality and visually appealing communication deliverables utilizing the full functionalities of the Microsoft Office Suite software, including but not limited to, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Excel and Adobe Suite product and software.
  • Perform research, analysis, data entry, data extraction and data management for correspondence responses to Federal and other government agencies, internal stakeholders, external stakeholders, and other entities.
  • Provide advanced Communication Support to MilTech teams and projects as directed, including, but not limited to, technical writing, marketing, graphic designing, editing, and proofreading to ensure proper grammar, syntax, context, content and quality assurance of communication deliverables.
  • Assist in development and implementation of communication deliverable and technical writing quality control processes, training, and tools to improve the design, development, routing, review, and storage of communication deliverables.
  • Comply at all times with the MilTech Confidentiality Agreement governing non-disclosure of information encountered in the course of your duties, and the MilTech Technology Control Plan governing security and work controls. Both agreements will be signed by each employee and will remain in effect for the duration of MilTech employment.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Demonstrated progressive and extensive experience researching and generating print, marketing, and digital content.
  • Demonstrated ability to write across a variety of styles with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated ability to research and generate content using a wide variety of resources.
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, or communications, or closely related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Prior experience working with government communications deliverables.
  • Prior experience working with Plain Language and website 508 Compliance requirements.
  • Web and graphic design experience.
  • Prior experience working with ITAR, CUI, and/or other security-related data restrictions.
  • Previous experience with DOD or DHS technology commercialization efforts.

    Successful candidate must be able to comply with the federally mandated requirements of U.S. export control laws, which may require proof that candidate is a U.S. person. Per 22 CFR §120.15, U.S. person means a person who is a lawful permanent resident as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1101(a)(20) or who is a protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3).
    This position is contingent upon continued grant funding. A remote work location may be agreed upon, depending on experience, facility (such as office location), location suitability to meet mission requirements, and other factors.
    This position may require the ability to obtain a Security Clearance, pass the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Suitability requirements to obtain DHS security credentials, and/or meet other government-defined restrictions appropriate for work level and access. Other security-related requirements will include receiving favorable background checks by state and federal agencies pursuant to federal law and regulations.
    This position requires ability to travel potentially up to 25% of the time as necessary to interact with DOD and DHS customers and others, including travel throughout the Continental United States as well as Alaska, Hawaii, U.S territories and possessions, and possibly other worldwide locations.
