Position Description

Harvard University is launching a nation-wide initiative around platforms for microfluidics and optical engineering. The DARTS project is a large, high-profile, multi-institutional project that focuses on developing microfluidics and microscopy tools to capture microbes from clinical samples and identify the antibiotics to which they are sensitive. This position will receive training in microfluidics and production engineering in order to help develop microfluidic devices for specific purposes. Working in a small team of microfluidics engineers, this position will help create variations on existing device designs, supplying them to collaborators for testing. He/she will participate in troubleshooting and optimizing designs for capturing specific pathogens. A key aspect of the design is the ability to capture pathogens from various types of clinical samples. Feedback on the performance of the device from collaborators will be used to improve devices. This position will then be responsible for producing selected devices at scale to supply to the >20 academic and industry partners collaborating on this project. Direct interaction with clinical samples or live pathogens is not required for this position.
Regular responsibilities include:
  • Assisting with design, testing and troubleshooting of microfluidic chips;
  • Developing production capabilities for large-scale production of selected chips;
  • Producing selected chip designs to a high standard as needed for supply to academic and industry partners;
  • Developing expertise in microfluidic device design and production.

Basic Qualifications

  • 4+ years of related experience required; a combination of education and experience may be considered.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Attention to detail.

Additional Information

This is a term position with an end date of September 26, 2026, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position.
The person in the position will receive training from their supervisor in the specifics of what needs to be done. We are therefore not looking for highly specific experience, instead we're looking for someone with an engineering mindset who likes to tinker to get things right.
