Description
Projects in this opportunity address the problem of why it is that measurements that use different measuring principles "orthogonal measurements" sometimes return vastly different results. Problems of interest include particle characterization (including protein aggregates) for biotherapeutics, and cell viability measurements for cell-based therapies and cell-based biomanfacturing. A key method is to perform simultaneous measurements on individual particles making use of lab-on-a-chip technology. Techniques include microsecond flash photography (including fluorescence), image analysis, and electrical signals (resistance and capacitance). Discovering the mechanisms underlying aggregation and cell viability states are also interesting project directions. For example, can the injection of a biotherapeutic to a human be simulated by a microfluidic chip system and then analyzed? Because of the interdisciplinary nature of this work, we are seeking applicants from diverse fields including chemistry, biology, physics, materials science, and engineering.
