Position Description

Advertised Job Summary
The Department of Biological Sciences is looking for a Professional Track Faculty member to support instructional needs in BIOL 250/250L (Microbiology) and BIOL 550/550L (Bacteriology). BIOL 250/250L is an undergraduate clinical microbiology course designed for students pursuing careers in the fields of Nursing and/or Allied Health Professions. The lab curriculum offers an introduction to bacteria and viruses, emphasizing structure, metabolism, and pathogenesis. BIOL 550/550L is an upper-level Bacteriology course designed primarily for Biological Sciences and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology majors. The lab curriculum offers an introduction to bacteria and viruses emphasizing ultrastructure, physiology, genetics, and growth with a discussion of public health, industrial, and environmental microbiology.
Instructor/coordinators are tasked with preparing, implementing, and overseeing all Microbiology and Bacteriology labs for the academic year, and for instructing at least one section of either course each semester. The teaching load for this position is 4:4 over the course of 9-months (Fall and Spring semesters), or the equivalent, based on a rubric that converts lab coordination to course load reduction. The successful applicant would also be responsible for training the Graduate Instructional Assistants (GIAs) who teach the undergraduate labs each semester and for holding weekly preparation meetings to teach the GIAs about the upcoming week’s lab curricula, location of all course materials for the week, and how to successfully implement and execute the lab curriculum to their students. Coordinators also assist with maintaining equipment used in the microbiology teaching labs. Academic advisement of undergraduate biological science majors may also be used for teaching load reduction.
This 9-month non-tenure-track appointment is renewable based on Dean’s Office approval, satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funding. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. at the time of appointment. Experience in the field of microbiology is preferred. Qualified individuals should complete an application and upload a curriculum vita, statement of teaching philosophy that includes a description of expertise & experience (1-2 pages), and the names, email addresses, and phone numbers of at least three references to https://uscjobs.sc.edu/hr/postings/119987.
Review of applications will begin June 1, 2022, and will continue until the position is filled. Point of contact is Dr. Amanda Zeigler, [email protected]. The start date is 8/16/2022.
