Job Summary:

This position is in the Communicable Disease Division (CDD) of the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH). Under limited supervision, the employee in this position functions as a team member within the Bacteriology Team, which consists of 8-10 microbiologists. The employee in this position should demonstrate superior oral and written communication skills, teamwork, management, leadership and planning skills. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to: 1) Independently performing high complexity diagnostic test method development, and validation; 2) Manipulation of patient and reference samples suspected or known to contain pathogens of public health significance; 3) performance of high complexity diagnostic testing , entering specimen result data and communications into the WSLH Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), generating worksheets, laboratory reports and performing applicable laboratory activities; 4) participation in ongoing quality improvement/quality assurance activities; 5) instruction of laboratorians, students and medical personnel in laboratory procedures.


Responsibilities:
Performs, develops, evaluates, prepares, validates, and manages testing services within a microbiology laboratory including human, animal, and plant diagnostics, surveillance, screening, environmental monitoring, and forensic science to report clear and concise testing results.
  • 5% Isolates and maintains cultures of microorganisms from specimens and samples for identification and classification
  • 5% Propagates and maintains cell lines and cultures for microorganism isolation or assay procedures and leads procedural laboratory biological risk assessments
  • 5% Serves as a subject matter expert to internal and external stakeholders to develop, perform, interpret, report, implement, and troubleshoot existing and new microbiological tests or assays for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of illnesses or determine sources of contamination in the environment
  • 25% Prepares specimens for scientific examination and analysis of highly complex assays and/or prepares the laboratory for accreditation audits/inspections
  • 10% Develops and conducts biological or environmental research experiments, performs routine quality reviews and root cause or risk analysis, and implements a plan of action to resolve issues employing quality control and quality assurance practices and adhering to regulatory standards and requirements
  • 10% Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots laboratory instrumentation and information management systems. May work with vendors in equipment service, troubleshooting and supplier issues
  • 10% Prepares, reviews, verifies, and reports test result data
  • 5% Prepares technical reports, makes scientific recommendations based on findings, and presents materials to stakeholders groups
  • 5% Establishes and maintains partnerships with internal and external stakeholders and communicates research updates
  • 10% Supports and/or trains new employees, students, and other professional colleagues
  • 5% Participates in educational and outreach activities and other professional development
  • 5% Supports new test development and validation studies and assists in bringing new technologies to the work unit

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree
BS Medical Microbiology, Medical Technology, Bacteriology or other biological science. Ability to meet CLIA Laboratory Testing personnel Standards required.


Qualifications:

Ability to pass a visual color-screening test.
Minimum of five years of laboratory experience required: clinical and/or public health laboratory experience preferred. Experience with high complexity molecular diagnostic testing (e.g. PCR, sequencing) required. Knowledge of biological and chemical laboratory safety practices required.


Work Type:

Full Time: 100%
It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
Hours: 7:45-4:30, Monday through Friday in person with occasional weekend and holiday work required.

Salary:

Minimum $60,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

Additional Information:

The minimum annual salary for this position is $60,000/year. Salary to be determined upon hire based on qualifications.
Hours: 7:45-4:30, Monday through Friday in person with occasional weekend and holiday work required.
WSLH does not sponsor work visas at the time of hire or anytime during employment for this position. All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete the required Employment Eligibility Form I-9.
