Division Overview


The MiChart Research Team is a part of the Academic IT (AcadIT) Division in HITS.  AcadIT serves both the education and research communities at the University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS).  We engage faculty, students, and staff to provide a holistic portfolio of software and applications, infrastructure, device support, and custom projects to promote innovation and excellence.  AcadIT is comprised of three areas that work in concert to provide support: 

1) Application Services - focused on product management and support for vendor applications.
2) Software Delivery - focused on building custom applications when a vendor solution is not available and offering secure application environments.
3) Technical Services & Engagement - focused on providing support for high-performance computing, device management, data integration, scientific programming, engagement, and outreach with our customers. 


Summary

Health Information Technology & Services (HITS) plays a role in the success of Michigan Medicine by providing clinicians, educators, researchers, students, and staff with technology-related information, products, and support. HITS also provides institutional expertise related to IT strategy, security, infrastructure, and resource management.

HITS is seeking a clinical business analyst to join our MiChart (Epic) Research Application team.  You will work closely with faculty, clinical research coordinators, and administrators to plan, design, develop, implement, and maintain the electronic health record at Michigan Medicine (MiChart) in support of clinical research.  Your abilities and expertise in clinical practice, research, and information systems enable you to bring together disparate ideas into a cohesive system solution and support end-users to ensure successful study outcomes.  You will report directly to the manager for MiChart Research within the Academic IT Division of HITS.

Responsibilities*
  • Perform end-user workflow analysis.
  • Consult and collaborate with subject-matter experts, faculty researchers and clinical research coordinators.
  • Document requirements.
  • Translate requirements into proper system specifications for Michigan Medicine's Electronic Health Record, MiChart (Epic), using your clinical background, and in alignment with research and clinical regulations and policies. 
  • Identify system design options.
  • Analyze, recommend, and prioritize system changes.
  • Configure, test, and implement changes. 
  • Create and maintain internal and external support and training documentation for system design and workflow.
  • Provide on-the-spot end-user support, education, and troubleshooting.
  • Comply with and understand internal change management standards and team documentation to use in conjunction with MiChart applications at Michigan Medicine.
  • Proactively monitor system changes for workflow impact, identify operational inefficiencies and recommend and/or implement improvements.
  • Liaison with Epic representatives, the Michigan Medicine and Office of Research business community, partner HITS teams, and end users to ensure the system meets the organization's needs and aligns with strategic priorities.
  • Participate in team responsibilities:
    • Take on call and triage tickets as assigned.
    • Assist other team members with functionality in which you are the knowledge owner.
    • Achieve additional training for functionality as assigned.
    • Mentor less experienced analysts.

Required Qualifications*

Senior Level Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an allied health discipline and 5+ years relevant experience is necessary 
  • Experience with an Epic application.  If incumbent does not have an Epic analyst certification or proficiency, incumbent must pass certification or proficiency testing within a defined time period following hire. 

Intermediate Level Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant allied health discipline, health care informatics, information systems, or related field.
  • 3-5 years relevant experience or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience supporting information technology solutions, research or healthcare informatics, and/or clinical care in a complex health care system or academic health center. 
  • Experience with an Epic application.  If incumbent does not have an Epic analyst certification or proficiency, incumbent must pass certification or proficiency testing within a defined time period following hire.

Desired Qualifications*
  • A Master's degree in relevant allied health discipline, research or healthcare informatics, or information systems
  • Epic Certification and experience as an analyst in one or more of the following: Research Clinical, Research Billing, EpicCare Ambulatory, EpicCare Inpatient Clinical Documentation,
  • EpicCare Inpatient Procedure Orders, or MyChart
  • Experience in building Epic SmartForms, Questionnaires, Cogito components, or Best Practice Advisories    
  • An understanding of clinical research and the end-user community.
  • Experience with applications that are regulated by CFR 21 Part 11.
  • Knowledge of governing laws, regulations and standards for human research including International Conference for Harmonization Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP).
  • Familiarity with Information Assurance principles and related policies, standards, and laws.
  • Familiarity with research billing workflows.
  • The ability to lead meetings, prioritize, resolve conflicts, maintain issues lists, manage a project plan, and follow-up as appropriate.
  • The ability to probe for information about the underlying needs of the organization and user community.
  • Ability to investigate and resolve project issues in a timely manner.
  • Ability to multitask complex work assignments.  
  • Exceptional communication skills (both written and verbal), collaboration, coordination to effectively relate with multiple teams, subject matter experts (SMEs), and customers, and confidence in dealing with complex business situations. 
  • Exemplary customer service.
  • Project management experience.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to accuracy and security.
  • Experience with:
    • ServiceNow or other ticketing systems
    • Use of Lucid Chart, Visio or other process mapping tools
    • Epic database infrastructure and reporting tools
