Description of Work Unit
The Energy Institute is operated under the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) at Colorado State University. The Institute builds on the long history of work in energy at CSU and is intended to foster greater collaboration among energy faculty across all eight colleges with broad access to facilities for faculty and industry partners. The Institute conducts research, education, commercialization and outreach activities for the entire CSU campus. The Institute operates two facilities; the Powerhouse Energy Campus, and METEC both of which provide safe, secure, and sophisticated facilities for university investigators and industry partners to collaboratively develop clean energy solutions. This position resides at the METEC facility, which is an industrial working environment.

Position Summary
This position manages the testing operations of METEC (Methane Emission Technology Evaluation Center) which emulates emission behavior from a broad range of natural gas production systems. The infrastructure at METEC allow leaks to be controlled, measured and realistic released, providing simulated emissions to test leak detection technology or support integrated research efforts into foundational phenomenon for leak detection. This position will be responsible for operation of the facility, including maintenance, operations, and facility improvements. Additionally, this position will assist with related projects in emissions, and offers the opportunity for field work. This position is a customer-facing position that requires coordinating with industry and university research partners, requires effective project management skills, and excellent interpersonal and communication skills to confidently interact with clients and visitors.
A signing bonus up to $2,500 may be considered for successful candidates.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of relevant professional experience or a Master’s Degree.
  • Detail-oriented with high level of attention to safe operation of laboratory and industrial equipment.
  • Practical programming experience in office software and at least one modern programming language (e.g. Python, MatLab, C++, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of electro-mechanical systems, including industrial control systems and related system documentation.
  • Can demonstrate ability to troubleshoot, debug and repair control systems.
  • Can demonstrate knowledge of how to install and troubleshoot gas and fluid system components such as tubing, fittings, valves, regulators.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Experience with installation, configuration, calibration, operation of scientific instrumentation.
  • Experience working in and/or managing technical projects; can describe project content, role and management methods.
  • Experience with / in an operation dealing with compressed gases of any type, ideally natural gas systems.
  • Experience in an research and development environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage customer-facing interactions.
  • Self-motivated and organized.

Essential Duties


Job Duty Category Operation of METEC Testing Facility
Duty/Responsibility
  • Responsible for day-to-day operation of the METEC facility, including scheduling, safety, daily operation, and customer interactions.
  • Utilize sound engineering principles, including theoretical and mathematical approaches, to design test systems.
  • Follow appropriate processes to track purchases and costs.
  • Serve as the technical liaison to clients utilizing the facility; assist in design of testing scenarios and associated electrical, mechanical, electronic systems.
  • Manage data acquisition, quality assurance, and analysis of test data collected at the facility. Recognize potential sources of error. Develop new methods or equipment to reduce or eliminate errors.
  • Assemble and evaluate information and prepare reports to customers and research partners.
  • Develop, document and enforce operational procedures for equipment, instruments and overall use of the testing facility.
  • Program tests and write code to run the site using systems and languages defined by the site supervisor.
  • Perform, and coordinate resources to perform ongoing site maintenance.
  • Supervise undergraduate and graduate students working at the site, including mentoring, scheduling and performance appraisal.

  • Design and prepare engineering plans and specifications for novel equipment and instruments to support desired testing scenarios; coordinate construction, assembly, and testing of equipment and instruments; and participate in the engineering, mathematical, and statistical analysis of experimental data.
  • Assist in preparing proposals and budget requirements.
  • Actively participate in strategic planning for the facility.
  • Attend external client working sessions to understand near- and long-term testing requirements.
  • Collaborate with other staff to inventory and track financial transactions, including equipment donations, project-specific costs, purchases, and other activities relative to project budgets.
