The MEP Systems Engineer leads mechanical, electrical, and plumbing projects across campus to provide the University of Kansas Medical Center main campus with safe and reliable utility services. Utility services include generation and distribution of electricity, steam, domestic and process water to all university buildings. In addition, this position will support the operation and maintenance of all utility and MEP systems.
Other responsibilities include design and coordination of long-term capital planning projects with a focus on deferred maintenance and long-term infrastructure improvement projects. This position will support of the institution’s adherence to local and state certification regulations including safety rules and regulations. This position reports to the Director of Engineering & Infrastructure within Facilities Management.
Job Description:

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management or related field. 

Work Experience:

  • Four (4) years’ experience in a related field.
  • Experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Possess strong organizational and communication as evidenced by application materials.
  • Experience with federal, state, and local codes governing facilities design and safety.
  • Knowledge of HVAC and utility systems of large multi-building, multi-use campus as evidenced in application materials.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/Certification:

  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM), or Certified Educational Facilities Professional (CEFP), or Project Management Professional (PMP).
  • Professional Engineer license (PE) for the State of KS

Work Experience:

  • Understand commissioning and TAB related work.
  • Working knowledge of local building codes and standards.
  • Project management experience specific to MEP infrastructure projects in large institutional or academic settings.

Job Duties Outlined:

Campus Maintenance Operations

  • Collaborate with Director of Engineering & Infrastructure to review and plan current and future MEP utility project needs including researching new products, codes, and regulations for the purpose of recommending projects to address aging infrastructure of utility system services around campus.
  • Provide consultative support to campus maintenance teams by answering technical questions and helping to specify equipment for repairs/replacement.
  • Write procedures for shutdowns and drain downs for building and campus MEP utility systems, i.e., domestic water, steam, condensate, electrical, HVAC, etc.
  • Review project warranties, guarantees, O&Ms and as-built documentation for accuracy and project turnover acceptance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Design and Project Management

  • Prepare equipment specifications and selections for all variety of campus MEP systems.
  • Evaluate equipment replacement alternatives comparing energy efficiency and life cycle analysis and make purchase recommendations.
  • Oversee systems design with other design partners (both in-house and external) including construction partners, equipment suppliers, and other engineers and designers.
  • Review vendor and contractor submittals and shop drawings for accuracy and answer RFI’s.
  • Perform project management and construction administration oversight for assigned. maintenance and/or capital projects including regular project inspections and quality control checks for the acceptance of completed projects.
  • Develop/review project schedules and budgets and authorize contractor payment applications including negotiation of change orders and value engineering solutions.
  • Ensure that rules, regulations, and policies are being adhered to by contractors and employees.

Utilities

  • Track campus utility expenditures by reviewing utility invoices for accuracy and update benchmarking of various KPI metrics for the campus energy management plan/goals.
  • Maintain relationships with utility providers and our budget/procurement of energy.
  • Articulate the University's energy savings to stakeholders by providing periodic status reporting on campus energy reduction milestones against plan goals and benchmarks.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
