Position Focus:

The embedded Mental Health Provider supports graduate students in degree-granting programs at the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (GSAS) by providing psychotherapy and therapeutic interventions for students. The provider will be available for same-day appointments, and to provide intervention and support to students in need. They will work with students to arrange appropriate ongoing care or resources. Leadership at GSAS may also connect them to students for consultation regarding matters at GSAS. As this role is to enhance student access to services through proximity, evening and weekend availability is expected. The provider will work closely and collaboratively with the GSAS leadership team to support student mental health and wellness initiatives. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Graduate Academic Support and Yale Mental Health and Counseling (MHC), the embedded Mental Health Provider (MHP) works with individual students referred to them by GSAS Deans and Directors of Graduate Study in individual degree-granting graduate programs. The MHP provides case management and school-wide group wellness programming. Working on a wide range of issues, the MHP also serves GSAS students through programming to develop strategies for time and stress management, resilience and coping, conflict resolution, social and cultural belonging, and wellness and self-care, working in collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Graduate Student Life. The MHP will support M.A./M.S. and Ph.D. students in degree-granting programs across the University. GSAS has more than 3,000 Master’s and Ph.D. students in over 60-degree programs across all academic divisions at Yale: humanities, social sciences, life sciences, physical sciences and engineering. Approximately 40% of GSAS students are international.

The MHP may provide individual therapy and/or group therapy for GSAS students. They can assess and diagnose mental illness. They provide culturally competent treatment to patients of varied racial/ethnic identities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and sexual/gender identities. They will serve as liaison to patients, families, and clinical staff on issues and programmatic initiatives pertaining to psychological services. They serve as a liaison to related resources across the Yale community and develop and deliver outreach programs to GSAS student communities. They adhere to psychology’s code of ethical conduct and abide by laws affecting the practice of psychology.
Additional responsibilities include Respond to acute or urgent need of GSAS students. Plan and coordinate individual and group therapy. Participate in the development of short-term patient treatment in collaboration with MHC.  Provide mental health emergency coverage.  Interact with internal contacts such as patients, clinicians, social workers and other medical staff, and administrators with regard to clinical programs and program development. Interact with external contacts such as outpatient therapists, residential treatment centers, and other mental health institutions. Respond to requests for support from the Yale GSAS Dean’s Office.

Essential Duties

1. Conduct patient evaluations and assesses patient progress or acceptability or psychotherapy programs. 2. Consults with the MHC department for long term therapy or other support of student. 3. Provides individual assessment, intervention, and group therapy to graduate and professional students. 4. Evaluates, assesses and modifies psychological treatment plans. 5. Maintains patient charts and reports. 6. Plans and coordinates the therapeutic activities of an individual or group. 7. Oversees the development of individual and group psychotherapy plans. 8. Establishes positive relations with patients in order to administer appropriate treatment. 9. Develops materials for educational programs and group events for students. 10. Serves as liaison to patients, families and clinical staff on issues and programs pertaining to psychological services. 11. May perform other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience

Master’s degree in Social Work and two years’ experience post licensure providing clinical care; or Ph.D in Clinical or Counseling Psychology; or Psy.D.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated ability to provide treatment to a diverse body of students.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Strongly demonstrated counseling, collaboration, interpersonal and communication skills.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Ability to develop, conduct, and facilitate group discussions and to design and implement mental health education and wellness workshops and outreach for students.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Demonstrated ability to support students with issues of stress, coping, and conflict-resolution through de-escalation, wellness, and resilience strategies.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Ability to manage working with multiple reporting lines and prioritize time-sensitive issues. Ability to work a flexible schedule to provide services when students’ schedules allow.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Knowledge of Yale University. Knowledge or interest in working with students. Understanding of the structure and challenges of advanced graduate studies.


Required Licenses or Certifications

Licensure as required in the State of Connecticut.
