Medical Technologist I


The University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine, invites applications for the entry-level position of Medical Technologist I in the Clinical Pathology Lab.  Under supervision, the incumbent will learn to perform routine and specialized clinical laboratory tests in the areas of hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, hemostasis, and preparation of cytological samples for evaluation by a pathologist.

Typical Responsibilities:

Specimen Preparation and Analysis

Accessions and prepares specimens for analysis in the areas of chemistry, coagulation, hematology, and urinalysis.  Accessions and prepares cytology specimens for the pathologist on duty. Tests patient samples in chemistry, coagulation, hematology, and urinalysis stations of the lab.  Performs manual cell counts on blood smears and fluids.  Reports patient results to clinicians and students. 

Instrument Maintenance

Runs daily quality control and calibration as needed on instruments in laboratory.  Performs weekly and monthly maintenance on all laboratory instruments.  Assists in troubleshooting and correcting problems that arise in procedures and instrumentation.

Miscellaneous

Answers questions regarding test ordering and test requirements.  Edits/cancels incorrect orders and assists in preparing send-out tests received.  Assists in filing the previous day's specimens and reports, stocking supplies, and cleaning as needed.

 



Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications:

This is an entry level position.  Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or a related field with completion of an accredited medical technology program are required. Medical Technologist State of Tennessee License, ASCP Certification (MLT or MLS) required.

The person in this position will join existing staff in the Veterinary Medical Center’s Clinical Pathology Laboratory, which currently includes four other ASCP-certified medical technologists, one laboratory assistant, three faculty board-certified in veterinary clinical pathology, and one to two clinical pathology residents. The laboratory serves the Veterinary Medical Center (small and large animal hospitals) and local and regional veterinary practices, with an approximate testing volume of 22,000 samples annually.

This will be a regular, full-time position having full benefits. Work hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and once a month on Saturday morning, 7:30 a.m. to noon. Four times per year (during midterm and final exam weeks of each fall and spring semester), the staff member may additionally be asked to cover after-hours on-call for one to several shifts.
