Summary

The Vannie E. Cook Jr. Children's Cancer and Hematology Clinic in McAllen, TX is seeking a full-time Medical Technologist with hematology lab experience.


Job Duties
  • Performs and analyzes high volume, routine tests in pediatric hematology including smear reviews and blood cell identification using validated methods and procedures.
  • Responsible for maintenance of CLIA/CAP requirements ensuring accuracy of statistics, record keeping, corrective plans for identified issues, and implementation into daily operations.  
  • Develops and maintains a Quality Management program ensuring accuracy of statistics, corrective plans for identified issues, and implementation into daily operations.  
  • Develops, implements and maintains workflow processes and procedures including review timeline and management.
  • Manages the Laboratory Quality Dashboard, Lucidoc and Accreditation Manager ensuring all information is up to date.
  • Responsible for hazardous chemical inventory and SDS library as well as the laboratory safety program. 
  • Responsible for training and competency assessment of other laboratory personnel.
  • Works with Laboratory Director to ensure smooth operations and supervision of laboratory. 
  • Performs daily maintenance and quality control procedures required for specific tests and records results.
  • Operates, performs preventative maintenance and troubleshoots laboratory equipment and instruments along with record maintenance.
  • Processes send-outs in serology, hematology, chemistry, microbiology, histology, or cytology using validated methods and procedures.
  • Prepares reagents and solutions following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
  • Collects/prepares specimens such as blood, urine, sputum, and other body fluids for analysis.
  • Identifies problems with specimen processing and acceptability and/or instrumentation, troubleshoots and makes corrections by using preset strategies.
  • Reports any abnormalities found in test procedures and results.
  • Reports findings utilizing the Laboratory Information System (LIS) as well as verbally or in writing based on guidelines.
  • Adheres to accreditation standards and guidelines and regulatory compliance.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or a related field.
  • Three years of relevant experience.
  • Certified Medical Technologist by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) and Board of Certification (BOC).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Hematology lab experience
