UIH is seeking a Medical Sonographer to join our Center for Women Health team. This Medical Sonographer operate specialized equipment that transmits high frequency, ultrasound waves in order to produce images of the areas scanned. Sonographer will perform advanced ultrasound scans that require delicate or exacting steps and seasoned judgment.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Independently performs advanced ultrasound procedures.
  • Consults with the referring physician regarding the patient’s medical history so that the proper ultrasound procedure is performed.
  • Administer and interpret scans and recognize deviations from normal anatomy, contacting the physician when those deviations are found.
  • Assist the physician with advanced scans and invasive procedures.
  • Performs minor maintenance and repair of equipment and maintains quality control of equipment.
  • Schedule ultrasound exams when necessary.
  • Train resident physicians and other clinical professionals in the technique of ultrasound scanning; explains principles of ultrasound technology to staff.
  • Maintains medical records, records of ultrasound procedures performed, and others as required.
  • Participates in quality assurance activities.
  • May act as a supervisor/manager including overseeing work, providing technical and operational assistance, and assigning daily work schedules.
  • Performs duties at the lower level of this series, as required

Minimum Qualifications Required: 

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Current/valid registration, certification or licensure in Medical Sonography, accreditation in sonography by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (RDMS).
  • Two (2) years (24 months) of progressively more responsible work experience in the designated area of specialty.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS CPR Certification
  • Note: A Bachelor’s degree in a health care related field may be substituted for one (1) year (12 months) of experience.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Knowledge of generally accepted principles, theories and practices of ultrasound technology of U/S equipment, use and function; knowledge of terminology and techniques used for U/S.
    • Knowledge of environmental standards and patient safety procedures.
    • Ability to read and understand medical records and interpretation of clinical history.
    • Ability to work effectively and pleasantly with patients, physicians, nurses, administrative, and support staff.
    • Continually review anatomy and physiology and the effect of disease processes as they related to gynecology ultrasound.
    • Read journals and attend annual conventions, seminars and symposiums to keep abreast of new techniques and developments in ultrasound.
    • Ability to perform Biophysical Profile and Amniotic Fluid Index.
    • Knowledge of health care facilities’ computer systems.
    • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing and managing files and records.
    • Demonstrate basic competencies in processing images and troubleshooting; performs minor trouble shooting operations.
    • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
    • Ability to use logical reasoning for simple and complex problem solving.
    • Ability to train students or residents.
