Summary

The Department of Neurology provides educational programs to residents and fellows, medical students and practicing Neurologists; support research in Neurological disorders; offer the highest quality, and state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.  We invite you to learn more about our nationally and internationally recognized physicians and our cutting-edge research.  We are seeking a motivated, qualified social worker who possesses basic general knowledge of social working for a Full-Time Social Worker.  The position is new to the Parkinson's Disease Center & Movement Disorders Clinic. This position will function 100% in the Parkinson's Disease Center & Movement Disorders Clinic.  The Social Worker will function in a capacity that learns the social working needs of the clinics and adapts to meet those needs.  The Social Worker will have the flexibility to develop their own method of counsel.  The Social Worker will receive training on all aspects of this position.  The Social Worker will have access to a network of Social Workers for assistance.  The Social Worker will provide professional social working skills involving face-to-face patient interactions.  The Social Worker is expected to perform responsibilities in a manner that promotes quality and safe patient care and customer service; adheres to the scope of practices as defined by social working.

Job Duties

• Completes a psychosocial assessment, primarily for therapeutic support and to remove barriers to care and barriers to following the medical plan, and ensure adherence to plan of care (30%) 
• Follows-up with patients who miss appointments to see why; Maintains big picture of what's happening to facilitate communication between different providers(15%) 
• Insurance verification and advocacy; All physician letters for insurance advocacy, Letters of Medical Necessity, immigration, charity applications, develop the letters for pre-authorization for new treatments (10%)
• Forms: FMLA, disability, employment, school/college (30%)
• Participates in end of life discussion, palliative care meetings and advance directives (10%)
• Maintains current knowledge of local resources and relevant medical research to provide best possible recommendation to patients (10%)


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Counseling or in a related field.
  • One year of relevant experience.
  • Licensed Baccalaureate Social Worker (LBSW) or Licensed Master's Social Worker (LMSW) by the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners (TSBSWE).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Social Work.
  • Knowledge of general Social Working is a must.
  • Basic knowledge of Medical Social Working. 
  • Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and complete patient benefit applications/forms.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to address a patient's request.
