Position Summary
This position performs scribe duties for physician clinical service documenting (on behalf of the physician) everything said during the course of the service. This position will primarily be located at the Washington University Medical Campus, Center for Outpatient Health (COH) but will need flexibility to assist at the West County site.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Fulfills the primary administrative support and non-clinical functions of a busy physician by scribing medical data into a paper or electronic medical record system.
  • Documents the events and decision-making in a manner that results in appropriate medical charting accurately.
  • Completes clerical activities necessary to assist with processing of physician orders for tests and medications.
  • Charts patient encounters timely and accurately, including but not limited to patient history, physical exams, diagnostic findings, lab and test results, consultations with other providers, emergency department treatment course, diagnoses, discharge instructions and prescriptions.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of anatomy and physiology, fundamentals of medical terminology and experience/knowledge working with electronic medical records.
  • Demonstrates effective written verbal and interpersonal communication skills to interact with physicians, healthcare providers/workers and patients.
  • Ability to observe and to draft a narrative account of events accurately and cogently, in grammatically-correct English.
  • Ability to spell, proofread and edit written text.


Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent high school certification with two years of college or business school.
  • Three years of related experience in medical office setting.
  • Knowledge of how to enter physician notes and charts into the Electronic Medical Record but is not permitted to enter physician orders.

Salary Range
$15.25 - $19.57 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
