Medical Research Specialist, Bacterial Research
TNPRC - Immunology
Location:  Covington, LA
Summary
The Medical Research Specialist performs technical laboratory work. The Specialist will work with Borrelia burgdorferi spirochete bacteria and their tick vector, Ixodes scapularis, as well as animals. The Specialist performs specialized assays such as Luminex-based diagnostic tests, PCR and RT-PCR. This position performs routine processes such as tissue culture, bacterial growth and counting. The Specialist assists senior personnel where needed. The Specialist keeps accurate records of experiments, assists with shipping of dangerous goods, and trains incoming students and personnel in various laboratory techniques.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of laboratory equipment usage and maintenance.
• Ability to follow protocols with precision and accuracy.
• Knowledge of laboratory safety and regulatory requirements.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel Spreadsheet software for data entry and analysis.
Special Required Ability for Incumbents Who Have Contact or Exposure to Animals or Animal Tissues:
Ability to complete and pass successfully the required occupational health screening referenced in the University’s Animal Handler Health Surveillance Program on an annual basis. 
Required Background Check, Physical, And Drug Screening for Incumbents Who Have Contact or Exposure to Animals or Animal Tissues:
Selected candidates must complete and pass a background check and an occupational health screening as a condition of employment. For identified jobs, a drug screening will also be required. The background investigation, required occupational health screening, and any required drug screening will be conducted after a conditional employment offer has been extended.
Required Education and/or Experience
• Bachelor’s Degree in a biological sciences field
• 3 years of research experience in molecular biology, immunology and/or other microbiology-related disciplines
OR 
• High School Diploma/Equivalent
• 9 years of research experience in molecular biology, immunology and/or other microbiology-related disciplines.
Preferred Qualifications
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Experience and training for administering controlled substances.
• Experience with rodent handling.
• Experience with IATA/DOT Shipping of Dangerous Goods.
• Experience with cytometric bead-based assays
Compensation Information
This position is classified as "non-exempt, hourly" and is assigned to pay grade 25.
