Position Summary

 

At Stony Brook Medicine, a TH Medical Physics Resident is a valuable member of our team, who provides clinical services to our patient population.  This is a two-year temporary position in which incumbent will serve as Medical Physics Resident. The Department of Radiology and Biomedical Engineering  support an M.S. / PH.D. Graduate Medical Physics program that will provide didactic portion of the resident training. Responsibilities of incumbent will include participation in all clinical activities, co-instruction of technology students and co-mentoring of Radiology residents in a research project.  Qualified candidates will demonstrate superior patient care and possess outstanding communication skills while adhering to our high standard of excellence.

 

Duties may include the following but are not limited to:

  • Completes assigned testing of the following imaging hardware: radiographic fluoroscopic, cardiac cath., digital subtraction, computed radiography, direct radiography, mammographic, computed tomography, ultrasound, magnetic resonance, scintigraphy, single photon emission computed tomography, and positron emission tomography systems.  Arranges for corrective action (repair and service) when specifications are not met. A preliminary report of required action is filed with appropriate service organization and the Chief of Clinical Medical Physics in a timely fashion following QC assessment.  
  • Completes various radiation safety assignments including, shielding calculations, safety surveys, dose calibrators testing, leak testing, source inventory, wipe testing, bioassays, air surveys, well counter efficiency, and radioactive waste disposal.  Reviews radiation safety and quality control tests conducted by technologist to insure completeness and compliance including sensitometry, CT phantom QC, mammographic phantom QC, MRI phantom QC, hard copy device QC, viewing station QC, gamma camera uniformity, resolution and center of rotation and periodic surveys (area, wipe and personal). 
  • Assists physician's in computational aspects of image analysis.
  • Reports are filed in a timely fashion.  
  • Audits the following courses: BE517, BME 518, BME 519, BME 530 and BME 610.  Assists graduate students in BME 615 and BME 161.  Attends departmental seminars. 
  • Completes; Part 1 of the ABR at the end of the first year and Part II at the end of the second year.  Mentors a:  radiology resident through a research project.   

 

Qualifications

 

Required :  Master's Degree in Physics or a closely related field. Knowledge of radiation detection.

 

Preferred :  Doctoral Degree.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as - $48,000 - $50,000. 

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBUH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

In addition, all UUP positions have an additional $3,026 for location,
