Medical Lab Scientist - Intermediate

Job Summary: 

The Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory at UT Health San Antonio is looking for a clinical laboratory scientist to join our growing team. The laboratory is operated as a reference laboratory by the Department of Pathology at UT Health San Antonio. We are involved in teaching medical students, residents, and fellows. The laboratory develops and performs molecular diagnostic tests for nucleic acid targets found in a variety of settings in medicine including hematopathology, solid tumor and molecular microbiological testing as well as a selection of genetic and infectious disease tests. The ideal candidate will be eligible for ASCP MB or MLS certification. Experience with molecular techniques including PCR and next-generation sequencing are a bonus. The candidate will perform a variety of molecular clinical assays, which may include Sanger sequencing, real-time PCR and next-generation sequencing.

 

Job Duties: 

1.    Performs standardized laboratory procedures and a variety of complex, molecular laboratory procedures within the area or section to which assigned; reviews test results for accuracy; completes reports.

2.    Evaluates and implements new or revised laboratory procedures and techniques.

3.    Reviews, interprets, and completes quality control procedures and technical troubleshooting.

4.    Performs regular preventative maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment.

5.    Accessions samples for in-house testing and referral laboratory testing.

6.    Performs inventory and secures supplies for molecular testing and manages supply requests.

7.    Assists in the writing, review and revision of laboratory policies and procedures and in the preparation for laboratory inspections by various regulatory/accrediting agencies.

8.    Performs all other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1.    Extract DNA and RNA from patient samples.

2.    Molecular technique experience. Prefer experience with real-time PCR, Sanger sequencing, capillary electrophoresis. Experience with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) is beneficial.

3.    Good dexterity with micropipetting.

4.    Advanced technical skills in performing and analyzing various molecular laboratory tests and procedures.

5.    Knowledge of general laboratory, safety and quality control, principles, techniques, and terminology and use of complex medical equipment.

6.    Excellent internal/external customer service.

7.    Ability to work in a Laboratory Information System.

8.    Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

9.    Excellent written and oral communication skills.

10. Able to follow written and verbal instructions.

11. Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records.

 

Education: 

Bachelor’s degree in related field required.

 

Experience: 

Three (3) years of experience is required.

Preferred Experience:

NGS Sequencing (Next-Generation Sequencing)

Experience/knowledge with molecular oncology

 

Additional Licenses and Certifications: 

Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Technologist in Molecular Biology (MB), or Specialist in Molecular Biology (SMB) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist or equivalent is required.
