Medical Lab Scientist - Intermediate

Job Summary: 

The Special Chemistry Laboratory in the South Texas Reference Laboratories at UT Health San Antonio is looking for a clinical laboratory scientist to join our growing team. The laboratory is operated as a reference laboratory by the Department of Pathology at UT Health San Antonio. We are involved in teaching medical students, residents, fellows, and visiting scientists. The laboratory develops and performs analytical tests for measuring concentrations of different drugs used in the treatment of fungal infections and different infectious diseases. The ideal candidate will be eligible for ASCP MLS certification and have clinical laboratory experience. Experience with analytical assays, including HPLC and LC/MS, is a bonus.

 

Job Duties: 

1.    Performs standardized laboratory procedures and a variety of complex, special chemistry laboratory procedures within the area or section to which assigned; reviews test results for accuracy; completes reports.

2.    Evaluates and implements new or revised laboratory procedures and techniques.

3.    Reviews, interprets, and completes quality control procedures and technical troubleshooting.

4.    Performs regular preventative maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment.

5.    Accessions samples for in-house testing.

6.    Performs inventory and secures supplies for testing and manages supply requests.

7.    Assists in the writing, review and revision of laboratory policies and procedures and in the preparation for laboratory inspections by various regulatory/accrediting agencies.

8.    Performs all other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1.    Sample preparation from patient specimens.

2.    Analytical chemistry experience. Experience with analytical assays and equipment used for measuring concentrations of different analytes or in molecular biology is beneficial. Experience may be within clinical or research settings.

3.    Good dexterity with micropipetting.

4.    Advanced technical skills in performing and analyzing various chemistry laboratory tests and procedures.

5.    Knowledge of general laboratory, safety and quality control, principles, techniques, and terminology and use of complex medical equipment.

6.    Excellent internal/external customer service.

7.    Ability to work in a Laboratory Information System.

8.    Computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

9.    Good written and oral communication skills.

10. Able to follow written and verbal instructions.

11. Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records.

 

Education: 

Bachelor’s degree in related field required.

 

Experience: 

Three (3) years of experience is required.

Preferred Experience:

Analytical chemistry (HPLC, LC/MS)

Experience/knowledge with clinical chemistry
