Description

 

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Medical Lab Assistant shall be responsible for phlebotomy services, acting as a subject matter expert to other departments, entering lab data into the Meditech and LabCorp Systems, delivering specimens to UAB, assuring that lab supplies are available and serving as a resource on requisition and order forms. 

General Responsibilities

  • Perform, check accuracy, and report results of routine and complex laboratory procedures on body tissues, fluids, and other substances when received.
  • Assist the supervisor and/or team lead with evaluating new instruments and/or methods, reagent preparation, quality control information, troubleshooting, and equipment maintenance.
  • Assist team lead with apheresis procedures, bone marrows, coordinating educational sessions, computer operations, and/or quality control/improvement activities within a section as needed.
  • Answers the laboratory phone number and serves as a content expert to other departments.
  • Compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Monitor temperature in lab supply refrigerator.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  •   Maintain log for I-Stat cartridge lot numbers. 
  • General oversight of Critical Value logs for I-Stat and other lab testing and quarterly delivery of the logs to the Quality Officer.
  • Appropriately monitor supply intake regarding temperature and placement in inventory stock.  
  • Maintains working knowledge of Callahan laboratory and LabCorp procedures.
  • Complies with all Safety/Health/TJC/CAP/State/Federal regulations.  
  • Conducts work with a servant-like attitude that views patients, providers, and other departments as customers.

Qualifications

 

Qualifications

  • Two years of college or equivalent relevant health sciences experience is preferred.

Key Skills

  • Must be highly motivated, assertive, and relate well to others.
  • Must be proficient with computer data entry.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to be flexible in all matters.
  • Medical terminology proficiency is preferred.
