The Interpreter will be responsible for:
- Medical Interpreting for patients and families with limited or no English language proficiency in their interactions with care providers and other hospital personnel.
- Translating complex and/or sensitive medical and personal information, including diagnostic and surgical procedures, treatment plans, medical histories and medical, social and psychological assessments.
- Identifying, assessing and facilitating understanding of cultural differences impacting communication.
- Preparing written translations of individual patient instructions, such as discharge instructions and treatment plans.
- Translating other hospital literature for patients as schedule permits.
- Providing education and training to hospital staff on subjects such as working effectively with an interpreter and cross‑cultural communication. Assisting in development and preparation of training materials.
- Maintaining computerized records of daily activities, including diary of daily patient transactions.
- The level of knowledge typically acquired through completion of high school level of education and two to three years' of closely related experience. Two years of occupationally specific education or an Associate's degree in Communications or health care related field is preferred.
- The analytical skills to resolve problems that require the use of basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles.
- Communication skills in order to effectively deal with conflicting views or issues and mediate fair solutions, or well‑developed writing skills.
- Written and verbal fluency in both English and language of specific populations served.
- Completion of 40+ hour Portuguese Cape-Verde Medical Interpreter training course / certification strongly preferred.
- National certification (from the Certification Commission for Health Care Interpreters-CCHI or the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters-NBCMI) strongly preferred.
