Position Summary

The Education and Learning Specialist assumes responsibility for assigned projects initiated by the Center for Education Research and Evaluation (CERE) on behalf of Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S). S/he/they will work to develop and facilitate educational programs, counseling services, and learning resources that promote academic success. S/he/they will assist with curriculum evaluation and continuous quality improvement projects. In addition to providing learner study and testing skill support, tutor training, curriculum design, and other education-related responsibilities will be assigned.

The Education and Learning Specialist reports to and meets regularly with the Director of the Center and works closely with the Student Academic Success and Learning Support Director and the Curricular Evaluation and Continuous Quality Improvement Support Director to discuss responsibilities and manage priorities. The Specialist also works directly with representatives of partner organizations and CERE staff to fulfil all project responsibilities.


Responsibilities

  • Provide consulting services for students with specific emphasis on learning, study, and test-taking strategies.
  • Develop and deliver talks relevant to learning in medical school, but not limited to entry into medical school, transition between key phases of the curriculum, utilization of progress exam data, and utilizing protected time to prepare for high-stakes examinations, and the ability to anchor those talks in educational best practice, patient- and care-centered learning, evidence-based practice, and data-supported strategies.
  • Advise and mentor individuals from groups underrepresented in higher education and historically excluded from medicine.
  • Utilize quantitative and qualitative data and research literature as a foundation for academic success practices, recommendations, and pedagogies, and an ability to implement data-driven practices and to demonstrate effectiveness using key performance metrics related to student academic support including student feedback, student evaluation data, evidence of student service, and value-add metrics.

Medical Education Specialist:

  • Lead faculty through the development and implementation of a mission-driven set of guiding values, values-aligned standards, standards-anchored assessment system, and assessment-informed curriculum.
  • Provide educator development coaching including: assisting instructors in curriculum development; writing effective learning objectives; developing and utilizing useful, reliable and valid teaching and assessment tools; and analyzing and reporting results that provide evidence of learning.
  • Support CQI processes such as running surveys to evaluate various educational programs.
  • Design curriculum and help design high-quality examples to help students learn.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus 5 years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree, PhD or EdD degree in educational psychology, instructional design, adult learning, MD/DO, or equivalent
  • Medical education work experience, including previous work as a learning specialist
  • Skills in building content in learning management systems, such as Canvas, with online survey generation tools, such as Qualtrics.
  • Experience developing educational materials and/or teaching that connects basic science, clinical reasoning, and educational pedagogy and theory.

Other Requirements

  • Three years work experience in a health professions or higher education organization as an educator.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with CERE staff and with a variety of other clients, including faculty, administrators, and students/residents of VP&S, CDM and NYPH-GME.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to set priorities, manage multiple tasks, and complete assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong technical skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point.
