Summary

The Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery is seeking a qualified Medical Assistant II to work with the Division of General Surgery in their multi-specialty clinic in Sugar Land.

 

This position will perform patient care responsibilities, provide clerical/administrative support in a clinical setting, and provide guidance to entry level Medical Assistants.


Job Duties
  • Performs routine patient care responsibilities such as taking vital signs and venipuncture (blood draws).
  • Schedules patient tests, procedures, and appointments. 
  • Conducts patient outreach phone calls and post visit follow-ups. 
  • Manages in-basket messages and coordinates incoming patient referrals. 
  • Enters orders for patient tests and obtains proper paperwork. 
  • Performs clerical/administrative responsibilities such as filing and/or scanning patient medical records, obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information. 
  • Schedules Surgeries.
  • Takes inventory of clinic supplies and orders supplies. 
  • Collects patient history, performs medication reconciliation, notes the primary complaint/reason for patient's visit, and enters information in the electronic medical record.
  • Sets up instruments and equipment for Physician. 
  • Administers medication under direction / order of a supervising Physician.
  • Instructs patients on general care and medical procedures. 
  • Maintains patient and service rooms in a neat and orderly condition. 
  • Assists with precepting / orienting new medical assistant staff. 
  • Delivers staff education, clinical in-services, and/or participates in clinical staff meetings based on the needs of the department and as appropriate to scope of practice for an MA. 
  • Supports the clinic's / department's compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert and clinical champion for areas of expertise within your specialty and as appropriate to scope of practice for an MA. 
  • Conducts performance Improvement activities that support the clinic's / department's goals for quality, patient experience, patient safety and/or efficiency. 
  • Sorts and distributes clinic mail and medical records to the appropriate clinic personnel. 

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED and completion of a Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
  • Two years of relevant experience.
  • Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NCCT, NHA, NAHP, or AMCA).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through American Heart Association.
