Department Description

The California National Primate Research Center, CNPRC at UC Davis, is an Organized Research Unit that conducts interdisciplinary research programs on significant human health problems where non-human primates is the animal of choice. In addition to its major efforts in the area of research, the CNPRC is also committed to both UC Davis and NIH missions of teaching and service.

 

Job Summary

Under general direction, serve as the Manager of Outreach & Communications with responsibility for managing internal/external communications and outreach that represent the mission, interests, values, and research activities of the California National Primate Research Center. Respond to requests for information from UC Davis, NIH and the media or designate another appropriate spokesperson or information source. Provide strategic advice and consultation to CNPRC Management, academic leadership and faculty in the planning, coordinating and implementing communications strategies, outreach, media relations, audience analysis and message development. Devise marketing strategies to showcase CNPRC programs and research/core services to the academic research community and to the community at large. Prepare and/or edit organizational publications for internal and external audiences. Provide project management support for assigned projects including managing online content and web design and development for CNPRC external/internal websites; produce text content and photographs; and monitor online information requests about CNPRC programs and services and redirect requests to the appropriate CNPRC Unit. Implement, maintain and execute the scientific public presence supporting a variety of national scientific multidisciplinary research activities and relevant issues that affect a large scale federally funded biomedical animal research organization. Provide support to the administration and scientific programs in managing the full range of public information and outreach programs designed to reach a variety of targeted audiences promoting awareness of CNPRC resources and services available to the research community. Function as liaison to NIH/ORIP, seven NPRCs and Strategic Communications regarding all public information activities. Coordinate press releases, public information requests and other center related scientific information in accordance with legal and regulatory standards and UC policy, and UC Davis media policy. Provide professional and scientific writing, photography, editing, and illustrative support to faculty representing a group of specialized research disciplines for grant proposals, publications, reports, posters, and other forms of scientific outreach. Manage the Education Outreach Program and community relations activities, presenting/promoting the CNPRC’s mission and purpose to local, regional, and national stakeholders in biomedical research and animal science.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Measles vaccination or proof of illness required. TB test or chest x-ray, measles vaccination or proof of illness is required prior to employment and annually thereafter.This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
  • Must be willing to work in an administrative role in a BioSafety Level (BSL) 1-3 facility where nonhuman primates may be either naturally or experimentally infected with potentially hazardous diseases such as HIVSIV, or Herpes B virus.
  • California National Primate Research Center employees are directly or indirectly engaged in the performance of work on Federal or State contracts and grants as well as periodically come into contact with controlled substances; and are expected to abide by the UC Policy on Substance Abuse, the Federal Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, and the State Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1990.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, journalism, and marketing or relevant level of work experience in communications, journalism, public relations, or Public Administration including technical writing for multidisciplinary research organization or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Experience in Public Information dissemination practices, communications and marketing in public research community relations including drafting and distributing news releases, and public speaking and small group training.
  • Experience publishing/design and photo editing software, and website management including the use of content management systems and social media outlets and using additional forms of media beyond text to tell science stories, including audio (such as in podcasts), animations, slideshows, and video.
  • Experience in education outreach program management and development, including curriculum design and instruction delivery methods, program, and project management; and promote public relations outreach to teachers and schools.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Applied knowledge and skills using professional technical research/scientific writing, editing and proofreading skills for scientific and technical research content and grant proposals, professional scientific journals, and publications.
  • Applied knowledge and concepts of microphotography and photography techniques (film and digital photography) lighting, depth of field, image processing/storage and retrieval.
  • Professional training in graphic design to produce art, displays, and materials using techniques including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Power Point, and Word, lettering, labeling, and formatting text, desktop publishing methods, use of scanner and file formats, file import and export, and output and reproduction methods.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:             

  • Professional experience to produce scientifically accurate and precise illustrations; create original artwork using technology and/or traditional art tools and photographic methods including knowledge and training in printing, paste-up, and marking techniques; printing/production, interpreting/printing negatives, proofs; and to interpret color conversions to match printer output and client expectations.
  • Experience to interview researchers, translate complex science into simple concepts, and communicate science news and information in clear, simple, and engaging language.
