Mechanics Helper

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES: 

Assist in overhauling, repairing or adjusting engines, transmissions, ignition, electrical, fueling and cooling systems, and related component systems.  Clean and maintain materials, tools, and equipment used in the performance of duties; perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures; maintain a safe and clean work environment; maintain records and retrieve date related to work performed using computerized maintenance management systems and other recordkeeping systems; prepare standard reports; and consult and work with other trades workers. May operate automotive and other equipment and assist in directing less skilled workers. Work performed independently does not require journey-level mechanic skills. May perform related work activities. Work may involve exposure to hazardous materials.  Other related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: 

Knowledge:  Working general knowledge of the names of automotive parts, machine parts and automotive and heavy equipment; working knowledge of materials, machines and hand tools, and equipment and procedures used in the maintenance and repair of these parts and equipment; working knowledge of applicable safety practices and regulations.

Abilities: Must be able to identify automotive, equipment and machine parts; perform the less skilled tasks involved in repairing and servicing automotive and heavy mechanical equipment; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; perform simple arithmetic calculations as required by the position.

Experience: These abilities normally would be acquired through a combination of experience and vocational/trade schooling such as completion of a recognized vocational course in automotive or heavy construction equipment technology and/or equivalent experience in the duties outlined above.  Must possess interpersonal skills in order to interact and communicate effectively with all management, staff, and co-workers.  Must interpret a wide variety of written rules and regulations.  Ability to successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program; must have the ability to provide proof of eligibility to lawfully operate a motor vehicle in the state of California.  Must be able to accommodate a work schedule that varies according to operational needs which may include evening and weekend hours.  This position requires full range of motion and a variety of movements necessary to perform strenuous manual labor, including but not limited to lifting and moving moderate sized equipment up to 50 lbs., bending, climbing, reaching, and applying force; work may involve exposure to hazardous materials. May be required to obtain worker certifications for hazardous materials, i.e. Asbestos and Lead Worker.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.

Hiring Salary:  $4,436 per month
