Plumber B (Journeyman)

Assembles, installs, inspects, maintains, and repairs building plumbing, heating and hot water (gas and oil fired) system components at Babson College; adjusts those systems as necessary for optimal performance and maintains compliance with state/local building and plumbing codes/regulations by performing the following essential duties.
The schedule will be Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm. The hourly rate is $41.50/hour.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Measures, cuts, threads, assembles, fastens piping and plumbing fixtures/components;  caulks joints as necessary to effect repairs to damaged or leaking toilets, sinks, etc., and other building/structure/field plumbing components.

  • Installs, inspects, tests, maintains and repairs plumbing systems items (i.e., valves, pumps, toilets, sinks, etc.), as well as other similar type fixtures and equipment.

  • Investigates and clears obstructions clogging drain lines, toilets, as well as other similar type fixtures and equipment.

  • Observes/inspects buildings’ hydronic/steam heating and hot water systems to detect malfunctions; makes adjustments/repairs and performs required maintenance such as replacing thermostats, heating elements and other controls, changing filters, blowing down boilers, adding chemical treatment, replacing traps, burners, repacking valves, lubricating motors, pumps, and bearings, removal/replacement of piping (cast iron, copper, steel, brass, lead, glass, vitrified clay, plastic) and the tightening or adjustment of pipe fittings.

  • Responds to and corrects deficiencies identified in service order work slips executing new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials, provide access for future maintenance and avoid unsightly, hazardous and unreliable repairs, while meeting manufacturers’ installation specifications and local plumbing codes/requirements.

  • Other duties as assigned - for example, provides help and assistance to other department trade group members as needed in the completion of work tasks; provides appropriate support in major campus events such as commencement and opening of school; participates in snow removal activities to maintain campus operations.

  • Assumes additional responsibilities as required.

WHAT EDUCATION AND SKILLS YOU WILL NEED

  • Minimum Level of Education and Licenses Required

  • Valid Massachusetts Journeyman Plumber’s license; will attend safety training as required by Management; Must have had a valid unrestricted U.S. Driver’s License for one year, and maintain throughout employment an insurable (as determined by the College’s insurer’s criteria) or a satisfactory driving record; must successfully complete and pass the College’s vehicle training program within the first 60 days of employment; annual or more frequent review of employee’s driving record based on the College insurer’s criteria; and safety training as required by management.

  • Two to three years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Must be able to function well in a team/community environment, displaying common courtesies and politeness; frequently interacts with students, teachers, co-workers, and administrators.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, material safety data sheets (MSDS), mechanical drawings, operating, maintenance, repair, installation and procedure instructions or manuals.

  • Ability to write routine instructions, reports, logs and descriptions of equipment problems and needs.

  • Ability to speak effectively to describe and explain specific problems and operating requirements of mechanical and plumbing systems to students, faculty, staff and contractors.

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

HOW AND WHERE YOU WILL WORK

  • All Babson College faculty and staff authorized to work on campus must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, including any appropriate boosters . A.  Physical Environment:

  • Regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.

  • Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, hazardous chemicals, outside weather conditions and extreme heat.

  • Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles.

  • Usually moderate noise level.

  • Regularly required to work extended hours and participate in an after hours emergency call-back program

Physical Demands

  • Operates a motor vehicle on a daily basis.

  • Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

  • Frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, talk or hear and smell.

  • Occasionally required to sit.

  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

  • Regularly climb and/or balance up to 10 feet and frequently climb and or balance up to 25 feet.

  • Regular use of close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Additional Experience, Skills & Abilities

  • Criteria for advancement to next level:  Valid Massachusetts Master Plumber’s license or acceptable equivalent experience; valid Massachusetts Journeyman Plumber’s license, recommendation by supervisor; acceptable background check; must be in good standing with no documented disciplinary actions for previous two years.
