Berkeley Lab’s Facilities Division has an opening for a Mechanical Reliability Engineer to join their Engineering Team!

 

In this role, you will identify and manage asset reliability risks that could adversely affect the Lab’s scientific mission and operation. This role is divided into four specific focus areas: Loss Elimination, Risk Management, Life Cycle Asset Management (LCAM), and Regulatory Compliance Assurance. This position will focus primarily on Mechanical Equipment but will also have the future potential to expand the developed programs to cover other disciplines including Electrical, Instrumentation, Controls, etc.

 

You will be responsible for managing site wide equipment class specific programs (i.e. Boiler Management, Pressure Vessel Safety, Chiller Efficiency, Air Compressor Reliability, etc) developing the guidelines and requirements as well as successfully executing the plans, running site-wide reliability programs and studies including vulnerability/risk assessments, PM effectiveness, Bad Actor Elimination, Design for Reliability standards, Total Cost of Ownership reviews, and others working with multidisciplinary teams. Additionally, you will develop and steward advanced reliability metrics and analytics, providing trends and data to both customers, facilities managers, and capital project teams and leading Root Cause Failure Analysis efforts for system and equipment failures.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Develop, implement, and manage the processes and procedures necessary to build and maintain comprehensive mechanical system reliability programs.
  • Define training and certification requirements for compliance and regulatory maintenance of critical equipment for in-house technicians/crafts people and contractors.
  • Conduct Reliability Studies for Facilities Systems and Equipment including:
  • Criticality and Risk Assessments
  • Intensive Process Reviews & Opportunity Identification
  • Failure Modes and Effects Analysis
  • Remaining Useful Life and Obsolescence Reviews
  • Asset Utilization
  • Other reliability, efficiency, and sustainability focused studies
  • Lead system and equipment Root Cause Failure Analysis including facilitating investigations, manages and drives corrective actions, and identifies training opportunities within the Facilities Engineering Division.
  • Utilize advanced reliability analytics including modelling and prediction software to provide guidance for customers, facilities management, and capital project teams including project justification, redundancy, and critical sparing strategies.
  • Implement a Bad Actor program for tracking equipment with high rates of repair and provide guidance to the zone engineers.
  • Work closely with Program Manager and Business Transformation Manager to develop Facilities processes and workflows to improve organizational effectiveness.
  • Develop and steward guidelines and standards for Design-for-Reliability as part of the capital project process focused on full Life Cycle Asset Management and Total Cost of Ownership.
  • Facilitate the preventative maintenance feedback and improvement programs across the site working with technicians, crafts, zone engineers, and equipment manufacturers to ensure the program is efficient and effective based on real-world failure data, incidents, and crafts input.

 

What Is Required:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Mechanical Engineering (or a closely related discipline) and a minimum of 5 years of directly relevant mechanical reliability engineering experience including facilitating Root Cause Failure Analysis investigations utilizing Five-Why, Why-Trees, Fishbone, TapRoot, and other similar methodologies.
  • Knowledge of both fixed and mechanical equipment reliability concepts and practices including Predictive/Preventative Maintenance and Inspection as well as troubleshooting, failure analysis, risk assessments, and reliability studies.
  • Familiarity with Pressure Vessels, Boilers, Chillers, HVAC, plumbing, pumps and other mechanical systems for office buildings, data centers, manufacturing facilities, and/or research laboratories.
  • Demonstrated verbal and presentation skills including experience conveying high-value complex information, reports, presentations, and analyses for a range of internal and external senior managers and leadership.
  • Excellent written communication skills including the ability to write processes, procedures, and workflows to drive organizational improvement and standardization
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including the ability to lead collaboratively, influence without authority, facilitate groups with diverse perspectives, and bring teams to consensus/alignment.
  • Must have the ability to climb ladders and perform site walk-thru, at times around hazardous systems and equipment, to investigate as-built conditions, to inspect construction, equipment, systems, and structures.

 

What We Prefer:

  • Registered Professional Engineer in the State of California.
  • Certified Reliability Engineer or Certified Reliability and Maintenance Professional.
  • Knowledge of design and operation of office & laboratory facilities.
  • Operational knowledge of chilled water plants, heating hot water boilers, compressed air (CA) plants and CA distribution systems.
