At the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE), we use a one-of-a-kind linear accelerator to deliver protons at 84% the speed of light to special targets to make neutrons that are used for scientific and national defense applications.

We are seeking a mechanical technician to join the Targets and Experimental Support Team. The team is responsible for the operation, maintenance, design, fabrication, and troubleshooting of target systems as well as the design, fabrication, and installation of experimental and operational equipment throughout the accelerator facility. Principal responsibilities for this position include:

Engineered Systems Tec 3 ($53,500-$82,800)

  • With oversight lead fabrication projects of mechanical hardware.

  • Assist in welding, testing, and installation of mechanical hardware for target systems and other systems.

  • Perform and provide support for heavy lifting operations with overhead cranes and forklifts.

  • Operate and help maintain mechanical systems and cooling systems including radioactive water and cryogenic systems.

  • Perform troubleshooting of mechanical hardware.

  • Develop technical solutions to difficult problems.

Engineered Systems Tec 4 ($64,400-$102,300)

  • In addition to the duties outlined above, the (higher level title) will be required to:

  • Independently lead fabrication projects of mechanical hardware.

  • Independently perform support for heavy lifting operations with overhead cranes and forklifts.

  • Independently maintain shop areas with minimal oversight.

  • Perform troubleshooting of mechanical hardware.

  • Independently develop technical solutions to complex problems.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineered Systems Tec 3

  • Experience performing installation, maintenance, and repairs on complex equipment and systems.

  • Experience in the use of common machining tools including lathes and mills.

  • Experience in common fabrication techniques.

  • Experience performing independent diagnosis of failures or malfunctions, replace defective components, and perform basic troubleshooting using detailed drawings, manuals, and verbal and/or written instructions.

  • Experience assisting in the design, fabrication, test and checkout of equipment and systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to interact and collaborate effectively with colleagues, other groups, outside organizations, and upper management.

  • Ability and willingness to be placed on a rotating on-call schedule with team members and work after hours on occasion.

  • Ability and willingness to work around radiological, chemical, mechanical and cryogenic hazards.

  • Ability and willingness to work independently to complete assignments.

  • Ability and willingness to participate in physical activities including lifting objects up to 50lbs.

  • Ability and willingness to participate in radiological activities that require multiple layers of PPE and a respirator.

Engineered Systems Tec 4

In addition to the requirements at the level 3, the Level 4 requires

  • Proven ability to lead and independently carry out technical work requirements

Education/Experience:

Engineered Systems Tec 3

  • Position requires an Associates’ Degree in a related field and a minimum of 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Engineered Systems Tec 4

  • Position require an Associates’ Degree in a related field and a minimum of 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, additional training and/or certification may be expected.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in a machine shop performing general fabrication.

  • Formal training/education in machining, welding or fabrication techniques.

  • Experience following formal procedures.

  • Ability to obtain and Q Clearance

  • Welding experience with GTAW and/or FCAW processes.

  • Ability/willingness to obtain LANL welding certifications in GTAW and FCAW processes.

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation):Lifting 30+ pounds; carrying 30+ pounds; color discrimination, standing, climbing stairs

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2-Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
