The compensation for this appointment will range from $27.00 to $32.00 hourly and reflects what California Baptist University reasonably expects to pay for this staff appointment. Position Summary Information


Summary
The Mechanical Lab Technician I role provides essential support to the College of Engineering assisting faculty members, staff, and students, in projects and maintaining lab equipment through training, supervision, and maintenance. This role ensures a safe and organized environment for teaching and course activities within the Bourns Machining Lab and/or Adams Business Park Machining Lab (hereafter referred to as Lab) and the College of Engineering.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Lab Support:
1. Provide guidance and support to faculty, staff, and students on proper usage of lab equipment, tools, and machinery located within the Lab and College of Engineering building.
2. Ensure all Lab activities comply with safety protocols and regulations.
3. Maintain a clean and organized Lab environment.
4. Prepare, purchase, and arrange materials, samples, and components required for course instruction and projects. 
5. Assist faculty members and students, in setting up and conducting lab instruction and course projects.
6. Ensure the proper storage, record, and disposal of Lab materials, including hazardous waste.
Equipment Maintenance:
7. Conduct routine maintenance and calibration, troubleshooting, and repairs on Lab equipment, tools, and machinery.
8. Coordinate with external vendors and service providers for specialized equipment repairs and maintenance.
9. Ensure proper functioning of equipment by performing regular inspections and calibrations, including showers and eye wash stations throughout the Lab and College of Engineering building.
10. Maintain an inventory of Lab equipment, tools, and supplies, and initiate purchasing when necessary.
Collaboration and Training:
11. Collaborate with faculty members, staff, and fellow technicians to optimize Lab processes and workflows.
12. Collaborate with faculty to develop and train students on Lab equipment usage, safety procedures, and techniques.
13. Support faculty members in the development and implementation of new Lab instruction and projects, including staffing open Lab hours to meet course and project requirements.
14. Assist in the preparation and updating of Lab manuals, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and safety guidelines.
15. Maintain compliance with ABET-related lab requirements.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position could be responsible for assigning work and/or giving direction to part-time Student Workers, in order to complete office work assignments.

  • Proven experience as a lab technician, machinist, or a similar role, preferably in a mechanical engineering, robotics, or research setting.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, laboratory techniques, and equipment operation.
  • Proficient in the use of mechanical engineering tools, equipment, robotics, and software.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and protocols related to lab environments.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in recording data and documenting procedures.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with faculty, students, and researchers.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • A thorough knowledge of: Business English and arithmetic; general office methods, procedures, and practices.
  • Ability to plan, develop, and coordinate multiple projects.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
  • Strong organizational skills and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.
  • Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.
Education and/or Experience
Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; or six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
