What You Will Do

The Weapons System Engineering Division (W Division) provides system engineering and program management to ensure the safety, reliability, and security of the US nuclear stockpile. W Division provides integral nuclear weapon engineering design expertise in the following areas: systems engineering, experimental device design, fabrication and assembly, surveillance, production of nuclear stockpile components, engineering analysis and computational simulation, weapons response and testing for evaluation, and maintenance of the enduring and future nuclear weapon stockpile.

The primary mission of the Weapon Product Definition Group (W-11 Group) is to provide specialized weapon engineering, design, and product data management support to the Weapons Directorate. W-11 provides design definition for all the weapons programs including Hydrodynamic Experiments and Dynamic Plutonium Experiments.

The Weapon Product Definition (W-11) Group is looking for Mechanical Engineering Technologist to serve as the team lead and mechanical design resource for the group. Daily duties include interactions with weapons engineers, scientists, designers and management to ensure all product definition created and released from W-11 meets quality expectations, standards, and requirements. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to travel periodically to other sites within the Nuclear Security Enterprise as well as to fabrication vendors to collaborate on product development assignments.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Design Experience

Experience leading a team or project consisting of technologist and or technicians supporting mechanical or electro-mechanical efforts. Experience designing mechanical hardware assemblies and applying engineering concepts to mechanical designs. Working knowledge of ASME Y series design/drafting standards, including Y14.5M Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing. Experience with Creo Parametric 3D CAD Software. Experience facilitating design, manufacturing, assembly and testing reviews, conducting product definition checks including GD&T stack up analysis and training design personnel.

Manufacturing Experience

Knowledge of fabrication processes, related equipment, hardware, and materials. Experience interacting with subject matter experts from manufacturing, inspection, assembly to identify and address concerns early in the product development cycle.

Communication and Teamwork

Demonstrated effective and efficient written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated record of developing constructive, cooperative working relationships, and working with teams to meet deliverables.

Education/Experience

A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with PDMLink Product Lifecycle Management Software.

  • Demonstrated mechanical design experience with the weapons program.

  • Experience with ASME Y14.41 Digital Product Definition Data Packages and annotated models.

  • Experience with practices and procedures used in the Nuclear Security Enterprise for conveying design intent to other national laboratories and production plants.

  • Active DOE Q clearance, or the ability to obtain an Active Q Clearance

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
