Position Summary:
The Mechanical Engineering (ME) Lab Manager manages the daily and long-term operations of the department’s machine shop and other supporting labs including the ME Makerspace and the Computer-Aided-Manufacturing (CAM) lab. They provide technical support and guidance with teaching and research in these spaces by creating and enforcing workflows and safety and establishing protocol and space and equipment usage guidelines. The Lab Manager directly supervises student workers in the managed spaces. The Lab Manager’s oversight includes support and training to undergraduate and graduate students and support to faculty with academic and research projects, maintaining and updating equipment in the managed space, fabricating parts using equipment, maintaining, and updating equipment and apparatuses, maintaining inventory, and providing additional assistance to constituents as needed. The incumbent assists with student-design projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Creation and oversight of workflows and safety, and establishing protocols and space and equipment usage guidelines in the ME machine shop, ME Makerspace, and the CAM Lab. Cunducts and oversees the annual fixed asset inventory report.
  • Responsible for fabrication of parts from mechanical drawings to support sophomore and junior lab projects, senior design projects, and other instructional projects. Supporting the research mission of the department and college by providing fabrication support for sponsored and other research projects and experiments conducted by graduate students and faculty.
  • Maintaining inventory of common parts and materials, and ensuring stock is available for fabrication. Maintaining a clean, secure, safe, organized shop and ME Makerspace environment for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Manage the upkeep, renovation and calibration of equipment within the managed space; attend necessary trainings and obtain required certifications to use equipment
  • Collaborate with other College lab personnel, the College Facilities Manager and other necessary constituents on capital expenditures and any relating installations, inventory practices and asset management, as well as general maintenance of managed spaces.
  • Oversee, manage, and plan an equipment and supplies budget of $75k.
  • Perform other duties and assist with projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • The individual must have a Bachelor’s degree or in lieu an equivalent combination of education or experience will be considered.
  • 3-5 years’ related work experience required.
  • The individual must be able to work independently as well as with others in a productive manner, and must have strong communication, organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • The individual must have basic mechanical lab experience and familiarity with machine shop practices, including knowledge of materials and proper specifications for fabrication of parts.
  • Experience with use of common shop equipment such as milling machine, lathe, drill press, band saw, etc., required.
  • General knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and materials systems such as to provide advice and hands-on assistance with commercial or custom equipment and instrumentation required.
  • Knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical test tools required.
  • Trigonometry knowledge and manufacturing experience with AutoCAD or Solidworks and mechanical drafting also required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in education-centric labs or environments is a plus.
  • Computer competency, knowledge of G-code, NI LabView, 3D Printing , and CNC Machining is also a plus.
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:
  • The position utilizes metal fabrication equipment and exists in a typical machine shop environment.
  • There are physical requirements of the position such as lifting, pushing, pulling, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time, use of manual dexterity, walking, etc.
