Position Summary

The College of Engineering & Science is seeking a Machinist to support teaching laboratories, student projects and faculty research. The Machinist will maintain a productive and safe machine shop and perform the required machining and welding operations as well as train students to perform these operations in a proper and safe manner. This is as much a training position as it is a manufacturing job and the machinist is expected to maintain a supportive and welcoming environment, to help students refine their designs particularly in areas of design for manufacturing and assembly. The position will also support pre-college outreach activities including summer camps. This position necessitates a fair degree of initiative and self-management, including managing and prioritizing work orders and maintaining productive workflow.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintain the machine shop, keep area clean and clear of debris, and keep all fabricating equipment in good working order.
• Expertly perform milling, turning, grinding and welding (TIG and MIG).
• Assist in performing basic electrical work including soldering, wiring, etc.
• Perform basic plumbing. Assembly and maintenance of basic pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
• Familiarity with additive manufacturing and upkeep and supply for 3-D printing machines.
• Utilize hand and bench tools to assemble, fit, align, and adjust parts.
• Conduct basic metrology work using precision instruments (i.e. calipers, micrometers, etc.).
• Maintain a safe environment by developing and conducting safety training workshops for students, both as class cohorts and as teams of individual students as needed.
• Support student competition teams (SAE Baja, SAE Supermileage, SAE Formula Hybrid, Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition and ASCE Concrete Canoe) by performing (or closely supervising) all safety and performance critical manufacturing operations.
• Provide the students with the tools needed to construct their projects and prototypes. The Department maintains several sets of tools that the Machinist will be responsible to maintain and assign to the students as needed, including fixing and replacing broken or lost tools.
• Support the teaching laboratories by: maintaining the equipment in good working order; setting up and assisting the instructor in conducting the experiments; and, making or procuring test samples and supplies as needed.
• Support the research work of faculty and students throughout the College by fabricating parts and systems according to supplied technical drawings (including the full understanding and interpretation of GD&T) and ensuring that the mechanical/manufactured system works properly and is maintained.
• Oversee use and maintenance of College vehicles and trailers.
• Support various events and initiatives within the College, including support of pre-college outreach programs, tours, demonstrations, summer camps, and events.
• Other duties as needed and directed by the Department and College leadership.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

Education: A two-year college degree or completion of a specialized course of study at a business or trade school 

Experience: Five years to seven years

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum of Associates degree
• Driving a forklift.
• Perform basic foundry operations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

•  Minimum of five years of experience as a machinist, ideally in a prototyping environment.
• Welding experience is required.
• Opportunities to acquire needed specialized training will be provided but the ideal candidate will have a proven track record in all the required skills listed above.
• Ability to take initiative, be self-directed, and see projects to completion.

Physical Requirements

Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds).

Work Environment

Regular exposure to unfavorable conditions such as weather conditions, or confined, noisy, or dirty locations.

Licenses/Certifications

Certificates in machining, welding (TIG and MIG), sheet metal forming and other vetted qualifications are preferred.
