Summary of Duties:

Nuclear Energy applicants at the Assistant or Associate level are encouraged within the topics of nuclear engineering, safety analysis, reactor design, nuclear materials, and radiation damage. Candidates are encouraged in all topics of mechanical engineering at the Assistant Professor level with emphasis on research interests aligned with the department strengths and state needs in advanced manufacturing, hydrogen, and aerospace.

MME currently has about 40 instructional faculty members, 900 undergraduate students, 100 PhD students and 15 MS students. The current annual extramural research expenditure in MME is $10 million. The School of MME prides itself in being an engineering practice-oriented integrated community of both mechanical and materials engineering, with multiple campuses across the state, close to key industry partners in nuclear, aerospace, and naval engineering. Our students are world-class, many winning nationally and internationally competitive awards as individuals or teams. About one quarter of all undergrad students participate in engineering clubs, and many complete undergraduate research. Our faculty exhibit excellence in both teaching and research, and we sustain multiple internationally recognized research programs in healthcare, manufacturing, energy, robotics, and advanced materials. The proximity of the Pullman campus to the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) provides exciting opportunities for our students and faculty, including several joint research institutes, including the Institute for Nuclear Science and Technology. Joint appointments for WSU faculty with PNNL are possible for successful candidates.   

It is expected that the successful candidate will, in collaboration with the current faculty, play a leading role in building interdisciplinary teams with substantial external research funding in the respective area, and be an effective instructor for undergraduate and graduate classes in mechanical engineering.

Required Qualifications for an Assistant Professor:

  • Earned Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, ceramic engineering, metallurgy, nuclear engineering or a related field by the time of hire.

Required Qualifications for an Associate Professor:

  • Earned Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, ceramic engineering, metallurgy, nuclear engineering or a related field by the time of hire and at least 6 years’ experience as an Assistant Professor or equivalent.

  • Candidates at the Associate Professor level must possess superior leadership skills and experience applicable to leading large, externally-funded research programs

Required Qualifications for both Assistant and Associate Professor:

  • Demonstrated record of accomplishments to build a robust research program.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to collaborate with internal and external groups to build successful interdisciplinary teams with substantial externally-funded research portfolios.

  • Demonstrated leadership roles in the respective areas, and effective instructors of undergraduate and graduate classes in mechanical engineering.

9-Month Salary:

Assistant Professor: $95,000 - $115,000

Associate Professor: $110,000 - $130,000

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110 , the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
