Job Description

Facilities Development and Management, Office of the University Architect, seeks a Mechanical Engineer Senior to perform professional mechanical engineering duties for a variety of engineering functions, including overseeing the design of research laboratories, classrooms, offices and campus infrastructure projects. Work assignments will be broad in scope and require the use of independent judgment and initiative in making technical decisions of considerable difficulty. Ensures adherence to established scope, budgets, and standards.

Essential Duties

The Mechanical Engineer Senior will participate in master planning, capital planning, and design management for projects of varied complexity and size with budgets ranging from $50,000 to $200,000,000. They will work with various university entities to oversee the design of chilled water, heating, HVAC, fire protection, mechanical, plumbing and hydronic systems for both renovation and new building projects. Participate in the analysis and planning of campus infrastructure, applying LEED and other sustainability initiatives. They will coordinate with various university entities to independently develop initial mechanical project definition reports outlining the feasibility of proposed building projects, including the development of the initial scope, budget, schedule and existing conditions assessments. The Mechanical Engineer Senior develops or manages external design professionals in the mechanical engineering related designs for University owned or leased buildings. Prepare, design and/or supervise the preparation of construction drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for various mechanical engineering scopes, including but not limited to heating, ventilation, air conditioning and piping design projects for renovations and new construction. Analyze and evaluate building energy consumption and recommends methods and materials to conserve energy and utilities to align with Arizona State University’s sustainability goals. Prepare and review contract change orders and time extensions and reviews, and verifies pay and final estimates and monthly claims for payment. Prepare special reports on fire code compliance, energy studies, and ventilation requirements for various facilities. Consult with and advise inspectors regarding mechanical problems encountered during construction of major projects. Attend final inspections and recommends acceptance or rejection of completed works. Give technical advice to management and staff. Administer consulting contracts for design and construction management of mechanical engineering projects by coordinating the work of consultants and University staff. Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service. They are responsible in ensuring that all designs meet Arizona Board of Regents policies as well as University goals, guidelines and contractual obligations. They also assist with updating University standards and guidelines. May supervise staff.

DAYS AND SCHEDULE:  Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.  This position may be eligible for flexible work options, including alternative work schedules or hybrid remote work schedules where employees spend a minimum of 60% of their regular workweek at their primary ASU work location, subject to approvals per ASU policy.


Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field, and seven (7) years professional level mechanical engineering experience, which includes two (2) years of supervisory experience; OR eleven (11) years of engineering experience, which includes seven (7) years of professional level mechanical engineering experience, which includes two (2) years of supervisory experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved. Registered as a professional Engineer in the State of Arizona OR, become a registered professional Engineer in the State of Arizona within six (6) months after date of hire. Employee must possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.


Desired Qualifications

Possession of a certificate of registration as a professional Engineer, with proficiency in Mechanical Engineering, with registration in the State of Arizona.

Five (5) years mechanical design experience in the construction and/or renovation area.

Experience:

  • Preparing and reviewing mechanical designs for academic spaces, including campus infrastructure, classrooms, research laboratories and office spaces.
  • Engineering design applications. 
  • Manage various project delivery methods including Job Order Contract (JOC), Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) and Design Build (DB)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Autodesk AutoCAD, Bluebeam Revue and PMIS (project management information software) programs.


Skill In:

  • Applying engineering principles and procedures for construction. 


Demonstrated knowledge In:

  • LEED, energy conservation management, techniques, and evaluation of systems. 
  • Building, plumbing, mechanical, and fire codes, OSHA requirements, and related regulations.
  • Development and derivation of formulas and relationships, basic assumptions made and their limitations and areas of applicability of established mechanical engineering principles, methods, and techniques.

Working Environment

Accesses various campus sites which involves walking, climbing stairs or ladders, standing and walking on uneven surfaces for long periods of time in extreme temperatures. Conducts physical inspections in confined space and above ceilings. Drives University vehicle and/or cart to campus sites. Operates a computer, which requires sitting for long periods of time. Use of personal protective equipment as required.

This position requires that you must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment.  Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39 month period from date of hire.

This position is dependent on the continuation of funding from a specific source other than general operating funds.  As such, this appointment may terminate when the funding is no longer available.
