ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

The Isotope Research and Production Department (IP) is part of the Nuclear Particle Physics Directorate. The program's focus is three-fold: to produce and distribute radioisotopes for applications in industry, environment, and medicinal applications, maintain infrastructure, and perform research and development for new applications. The major facilities of the IP Department include the Brookhaven Linac Isotope Producer (BLIP), the Cyclotron facility and the Radionuclide Research and Production Laboratory, hosting two suites of hot cells. The BLIP utilizes high intensity proton beams of up to 200 MeV and the cyclotron uses protons from 13 to 19 MeV to irradiate targets. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The IP Department has an exciting opportunity for an experienced mechanical engineer with project management experience. In this role, you will be an integral part of the IP team leading and supporting engineering projects, and coordinating tasks assigned to ensure technical aspects of projects are in full compliance with codes and standards and meet operations objectives. You will be responsible for overseeing assigned engineering-related activities associated with IP operations and facilities, including design of new equipment/systems, modification of existing components/systems, monitoring/maintenance of existing systems, including reliability enhancements. A key aspect is the ability to integrate an engineering approach within a multidisciplinary environment. IP engineering systems are in the areas of HVAC, water cooling, radiation shielding, remote manipulations and lifting, robotic equipment, helium cooling, compressed air, electro-mechanical interfaces.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for developing/coordinating design, procurement, and installation of engineering projects, including but not limited to HVAC, target cooling water, target design, hot cells operation, radiation shielding and shielded casks

  • Interface with other engineering disciplines and technicians to integrate applicable expertise

  • Ensure configuration management process is effectively implement

  • Identify and propose improvement initiatives and opportunities to streamline processes

  • Collaborate with scientific and operational personnel, engineering support and technical groups and other program representatives to support initiatives with common goals

  • Collaborate with management teams and staff to increase efficiency, decrease costs, improve safety, and engage in driving performance improvement

  • Writing and revising procedures

  • Ensure designs are code compliant and adhere to BNL design standards/guidelines

  • Preparation of reports and presentations

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or closely related field with a focus on facilities and systems

  • Three (3) years of full- time relevant experience including general design, process control, equipment design and installation, construction practices, configuration management, and Design Change Control

  • Experience in facility-based design and/or process-based design, construction projects

  • Working knowledge of project management software (e.g., Microsoft Project)

  • Technical knowledge and experience Working knowledge of 3D Modeling/Drafting Software (i.e. Solidworks, Autocad, CATIA, CREO, etc.)

  • Working knowledge of Finite Element Analysis software (ANSYS or equivalent)

  • Proven competencies in budgeting of design projects

  • Clear and concise oral and written communication and presentation skills

  • Interpersonal skills to effectively engage all levels of management and staff

  • Able to evaluate proposed solutions and weigh their impact on cost, scheduling of construction, and long-term maintenance

  • Experience in developing equipment design packages to the required performance parameters

  • Ability to work as part of multidisciplinary teams

  • Ability to meet deadlines and budget goals

  • Knowledgeable of the International Mechanical Code, NYS Mechanical Code, and ASHRAE standards

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline with a focus on facilities and systems

  • Seven (7) years of full-time relevant experience

  • Professional Engineer license

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Essential functions for this position include visual acuity

  • Climbing fixed ladders

OTHER INFORMATION:

  • Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $94,250 - $140,900 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
