JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:


We are searching for a junior Mechanical Research & Development Engineer to join our Energy Science and Power Systems Division at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University.  In collaboration with other scientists and engineers, your responsibilities include investigating, evaluating, and applying scientific theories and engineering principles, performing engineering product development, and conducting experiments and tests. The Energy Science and Power Systems Division at the Penn State Applied Research Lab performs critical research and development in the design, prototyping, and testing of energy and power systems for Naval applications. These include high-energy-density systems for underwater vehicle propulsion, as well as other applications with unique constraints (outer space, stationary underwater power, etc.).

You will:

  • Design and conduct analysis of mechanical, fluid-flow, and heat transfer components for thermal power plants and other energy conversion systems
  • Assist with component and subsystem test planning, test execution, and documentation

This position will be filled as a level 1 or level 2, depending upon the successful candidate’s education and experience.  Typical requirements include a Bachelor's degree in an Engineering or Science discipline for a level 1.  Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level positions.

The ability to effectively communicate theories and results to colleagues, management, and sponsors, in both written and presentation format, is required.

Experience areas preferred, but not required to be considered for this position, include:

  • A Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred) in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or a similar engineering discipline
  • Material selection, structural design, gears, bearings, seals, pumping elements, heat exchangers, fluid delivery systems, and combustion
  • Solid-modeling CAD software (Unigraphics/Seimens NX)
  • Finite element analysis tools
  • Standard drafting practices, including geometric tolerances
  • An active government security clearance

This position’s working location is fully on-site.
