JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:


We are searching for a Mechanical Engineer to join our Composite Materials Division at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL/Penn State’s purpose is to develop innovative solutions to challenging national problems in support of the Navy, DoD, and Intel communities engineering and technology needs. You will primarily focus on advanced material design and analysis for U.S. Navy systems.


You will:

  • Design and perform static and dynamic finite element analysis
  • Participate in concurrent and collaborative research initiatives in all program phases from concept development
  • Identify mechanical design problems and related technical issues leading to long term, generic solutions
  • Identify technical approaches for solving structural performance problems and meeting customer/grantor needs.
  • Mentor and train employees in the development of technical, project, and business development skills
  • Make substantial contributions to determining feasibility of goals/objectives; may evaluate proposed or ongoing projects
  • Provide innovative problem-solving approaches to enhance organizational capabilities; use peer network to expand technical capabilities and identify new research opportunities

This position requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering or Science discipline plus 5 years of related experience.  A Masters' degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering is preferred.

Required skills/experience areas include:

  • Solidworks and Siemens NX
  • Finite element modelling using Abaqus
  • Mechanical design especially with undersea systems and vehicles
  • Proven ability to contribute to reports, proposal and presentations related to mechanical design
