JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

We are searching for a Mechanical Engineer to join our Vehicle Operations team located at our Keyport, WA facility of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. The selected candidate will design, build, and test mechanical systems that support Unmanned Undersea Vehicle (UUV) development, operations, and testing.

 

You will …

  • Use problem solving skills, identifying technical issues that can be addressed for long term success
  • Provide technical rigor and discipline to problem solving process
  • Take projects from mechanical concept, to solid models, then drawings, and prototype construction
  • Build, install, troubleshoot, modify, and repair mechanical systems.
  • Collaborate across disciplines (mechanical, electrical, software, logistics) in a small team environment of engineers, technicians, and US Navy personnel
  • Support field testing of UUVs working on small boats and ocean going vessels for UUV development and testing events
  • Travel to support UUV test events 1-4 times per year varying from 1-3 weeks per trip

This position will be filled as a Level 2 or Level 3 depending upon the successful candidate’s competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline plus 2 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 2. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher-level jobs. A Masters’ degree is preferred.

Requirements include:

  • Demonstrated ability to solve mechanical problems, improve mechanical systems, and design/fabricate/test mechanical components, preferably for undersea applications.
  • Accomplished field engineer including planning field test events, test execution, support, and troubleshooting during test events. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team (give examples) of engineers and technicians, preferably during test environments. 

Additional requirements for a Level 3:

  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams that evaluate and solve complex, time sensitive mechanical problems of fielded systems, preferably undersea.
  • Skilled program leader, communicating with management, sponsor, and USN Fleet representatives.  Building a team that can accomplish tasking on time and on budget while meeting all technical objectives. 
  • Evaluating and managing risk, leading effort to understand issues while anticipating and solving potential problems for UUV field test before they occur.
