Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer who will support the Testbed Engineering Group in the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division (ESED), Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate (ISED) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

ESED serves the nation in two critical areas: advancing enrichment technologies and exploring stable isotope production and applications. The division leverages an elite staff of scientists and engineers with the world-leading capabilities of ORNL to deliver groundbreaking advancements with a variety of applications, from national security to life-saving medical treatments.

ESED is the national steward for the research, development, and demonstration of centrifuge technology. The successful candidate will provide research and development (R&D) leadership within the group that strategically advances science and technology focused on gas testing of prototype enrichment devices for processing uranium-bearing and stable isotope compounds.

The Testbed Engineering Group is focused on the development of gas test beds and enrichment systems by conceptualizing and designing robust and flexible systems using state-of-the-art engineering principles. This position will have an emphasis in the development of equipment and system designs utilized to process uranium-bearing and stable isotope compounds. The successful candidate will make a significant contribution to projects involving isotope enrichment, nuclear nonproliferation, and instrumentation of mission-critical systems.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Create part and assembly models in SolidWorks to support the 3D routing of process and utility systems
  • Generate detailed mechanical drawings to facilitate fabrication and installation of equipment
  • Help technicians and engineers procure, assemble, maintain, and perform tests on system installations in a variety of R&D settings
  • Work with Process Engineers to prepare PFD’s and P&IDs in Visio
  • Produce building models of existing infrastructure to define equipment interfaces and design boundaries
  • Establish and maintain piping component libraries for multiple pipe class services
  • Aid in the development of piping specifications and datasheets
  • Work in a Product Data Management (PDM) system to maintain configuration control of design files
  • Effectively interact with various personnel, both within and outside of ORNL
  • Interface with principal investigators, management, engineers, fabricators, modelers, and test campaign personnel
  • As a member of the ORNL scientific community, the successful candidate will be expected to commit to ORNL’s Research Code of Conduct. The full code of conduct and a statement by the Lab Director’s office can be found here: https://www.ornl.gov/content/research-integrity
