Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL ) Engineering Division has immediate openings for a Mechanical Designer Associate (Multiple Openings) to join the team.

 

LBNL has several active projects which need experienced Mechanical Design Associates who wish to contribute to the creation of engineering solutions using their design skills, knowledge, and abilities. This role will utilize combined and varied technical knowledge and 3-D CAD design in order to translate mechanical engineering and scientific concepts into design solutions requiring unique methods, techniques, procedures, or processes. You will execute complete technical or mechanical design projects, operational assignments, or major objectives within the framework of a particular phase of scientific inquiry or applied technology. 

 

This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs; and skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Apply technical expertise and knowledge of basic engineering/scientific concepts and practices to provide multifunctional mechanical engineering design using 3-D CAD Models to document the solutions.
  • Originate, evaluate, and prove mechanical engineering design concepts where the solution of technical problems is required and professional expertise is necessary.
  • Consult with program and project team members to focus on the specifications, form, and function of the design.
  • Contribute to the product data structure, configuration management, and change management of the product.
  • Collaborate on the definition of functional requirements and evaluate alternative design concepts consistent with schedule, cost, and material limitation.
  • Direct the design of apparatus, equipment, assemblies, facilities, utilities, and systems by interpreting and translating design concepts and layouts.
  • Meet project/task schedules and budgets. Complete work assignments with accuracy and meet technical performance criteria with due consideration for cost/time constraints. Maintain an appropriate level of documentation for activities.
  • Demonstrate ability to manage complex assemblies and understand parent-child relationships.
  • Apply advanced modeling skills including proper use of patterns, sweeps and trajectories, simplified reps, and top down design techniques.
  • Use CREO Parametric drawing package, including, but not limited to, ASME Y14.5 GD&T, multiple sheet assembly drawings and detailed fabrication

 

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • May lead the activities of skilled trade personnel.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge or experience equivalent to a BA level degree in a functional specialty closely aligned with a relevant program or equivalent computer aided drafting experience. 
  • 5 years or more, current experience with CREO Parametric (formerly Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire), or equivalent parametric software.
  • Significant technical expertise and knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and practices.
  • Significant knowledge of the various types of engineering drawings and their specific use.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply mechanical engineering principles and practices to technical design and implementation of technical projects, or operational assignments.
  • Experience in interpreting and translating objectives of job requirements into technical designs or functional concepts using 3-D CAD models.
  • Demonstrated ability to create fabrication drawings using ASME Y14.5 with a parametric CAD package.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with other designers, engineers and scientists in defining goals and contributing to their realization.
  • Knowledge and experience with product data structure, change management and configuration management.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years related to professional technical experience.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2-year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to a Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • Salary is commensurate with experience.
  • This position is contingent on the successful completion of a background check.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Hybrid work arrangements may be available, allowing for telework several days per week.
