What You Will Do The Materials Science and Technology Division (MST) is seeking a post-doctoral candidate with experience in the mechanical behavior of materials, to investigate the dynamic response of additively manufactured metals under high strain-rate loading. A successful candidate will be expected to perform characterization and mechanical testing at a range of strain-rates, from quasi-static up to shock loading, to study the structure-properties relationship between microstructure and damage nucleation. The position is in the dynamic properties team of MST-8, a diverse group of both experimental and theoretical scientists whose goal is to further our understanding of material behavior under extreme conditions. The team operates a range of test facilities such as load frames, split Hopkinson pressure bars, gas-guns, and a full metallography and microscopy suite. | ||
What You Need Minimum Job Requirements:
Education: The position requires a Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. The candidate must be within five years of completion of the Ph.D. at the time of being proposed for review by the committee, or must have satisfied all Ph.D. requirements by the commencement of the appointment. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential. Regular post-doctoral appointments are for two years and are renewable for a third year. Outstanding candidates (with approximately 15 - 20 articles in reputable, peer-reviewed journals) may be eligible for a LANL Director's Fellowship. | ||
