What You Will Do

The Materials Science and Technology Division (MST) is seeking a post-doctoral candidate with experience in the mechanical behavior of materials, to investigate the dynamic response of additively manufactured metals under high strain-rate loading.  A successful candidate will be expected to perform characterization and mechanical testing at a range of strain-rates, from quasi-static up to shock loading, to study the structure-properties relationship between microstructure and damage nucleation.  The position is in the dynamic properties team of MST-8, a diverse group of both experimental and theoretical scientists whose goal is to further our understanding of material behavior under extreme conditions.  The team operates a range of test facilities such as load frames, split Hopkinson pressure bars, gas-guns, and a full metallography and microscopy suite.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Strong materials science knowledge, with a focus on mechanical behavior

  • Experience with mechanical testing and interpretation of test data

  • Experience with metallography and microscopy

  • Experience investigating the structure-properties relationship in materials

  • Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with technical and operations personnel
Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with high strain-rate or shock loading platforms and associated diagnostics

  • Experience with electron backscatter diffraction microscopy (EBSD)

  • Experience with additive manufacturing techniques
Essential Job Functions:

  • Applying torque with hands or arms

  • Lifting / carrying 30 pounds, fine motor control

  • Ability to willfully follow all safety and security protocols

Education:  The position requires a Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.  The candidate must be within five years of completion of the Ph.D. at the time of being proposed for review by the committee, or must have satisfied all Ph.D. requirements by the commencement of the appointment.  Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential.
