What You Will Do
 

The Materials Science and Technology Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a post-doctoral candidate in the area of mechanical behavior of materials, specifically related to structure-property relationship in additively manufactured materials.  A successful applicant will be expected to perform characterization and mechanical testing at various strain rates and decipher relationships between microstructure and properties as a function of build parameters in additive metals and alloys.  The candidate will work within an experimental and theoretical team of scientists as part of understanding relationships between material structure and performance.   A successful applicant will be expected to publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present at well-known conferences.  A successful applicant will also be expected to work well in a team environment.

Minimum Job Requirements:

 

Candidates with a strong background/experience in the following areas are invited to apply:


  • Basic Materials science knowledge with a focus on mechanical behavior of materials

  • Experience with performing hands on mechanical testing at quasi-static strain rates

  • Experience with analysis and interpretation of mechanical testing data

  • Experience with preparing metal samples for metallography

  • Experience with using a Scanning electron microscopy, electron back scatter diffraction to analyze material microstructure

  • Experience investigating structure-property relationships in materials

  • Ability to work independently and a strong publication record
Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with investigating mechanical behavior of materials as a function of strain rate

  • Experience working with additively manufactured materials

Education:  A Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Solid Mechanics or related fields is required.  The candidate must be within 5 years of completion of Ph.D. at time of being proposed for review by the committee, or will have completed all Ph. D. requirements by commencement of the appointment. Excellent written and communication skills in English are required.

Clearance: A candidate with the ability to eventually obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance is required.  If eligible*, selected applicants will be subject to a Federal background investigation for access to classified matter.

 

*Eligibility requirements:  To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
