Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Engineering Division has an opening for a Mechanical Alignment Engineer to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will support a variety of laboratory scientific endeavors. These endeavors include supporting user facilities and projects such as the Advanced Light Source, the Advanced Light Source Upgrade project, the CMB-S4 project, and the DUNE project.

As the Mechanical Alignment Engineer, you will utilize your technical skills to develop alignment and verification concepts for complex assemblies for which you will require knowledge of kinematics, metrology sensors/equipment (CMMs, laser trackers, displacement sensors, etc.), and precision design principles, but also assist project management in the development of supporting cost and schedule information. In addition to your technical skills, you will also utilize your soft skills to effectively work and communicate with project management, engineers, scientists, and technicians to convey technical concepts and outcomes, cost and schedule, and provide/give presentations to internal and external (ex. project sponsors) members of the LBNL community.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Apply engineering principles, methods, and research techniques to creatively solve complex alignment and verification challenges based on new and existing technologies.
  • Develop and or assist in the formation of error or uncertainty budgets to support alignment and/or verification processes.
  • Collaborate with engineers and scientists to develop functional designs to ensure alignment and verification processes are compatible and achieve project requirements/specification.
  • Develop, identify, document, and manage requirements, specifications, and interfaces through their life-cycle.
  • Provide advice to LBNL staff on effective alignment strategies and expected outcomes.
  • Clearly communicate technical status, issues, and successes with project teams and management.

 

What is Required:

  • Education and Experience
    • BS degree or equivalent, in mechanical engineering or a related field and a minimum of 2+ years of related experience in mechanical design and alignment.
  • OR
    • Advanced degree or equivalent, in mechanical engineering or a related field and a minimum of 0+ years of related experience in mechanical design and alignment.
  • Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
    • Ability to exercise sound engineering judgment and decision making with a wide range in scope, analytical ability, and strong written and verbal technical communication skills.
    • Knowledge of kinematics and precision design principles.
    • Versed in metrology equipment to aid in aligning complex systems (e.g. CMMs, Laser Trackers, displacement sensors).
    • Knowledge in developing supporting error or uncertainty budgets (familiarity with the JCGM 100:2008 “Evaluation of measurement data – Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement”).
    • Experience in use of 3D CAD software.
    • Ability to work in a team environment and interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full time, 2 years, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
